Hello everyone;

I've been lurking around, trying to read up on things as much as I can, and get a good idea of what I'm looking for in a rifle as far as function, and apllication specific parts go.  I'm finding that the more I read, the more I have to learn. Lots of great reading here, thanks for everyone who contributes to this board.

So heres my situation, hopefully some of you will throw out your 2 coppers on what I should be looking for:  My soon to be wife LOVES to target shoot. she has a .22 LR that she is pretty good with ( she can hit the 10 ring or x ring at 100 yds fairly consistently). While not an extremely experienced shooter, I feel that she is progressing nicely. I got her out on the range with a friends SKS, and she didn't enjoy shooting that, due to the amount of kcik that it has. I took her to a local gunshop/range, and had her try an AR-15, and she fell in love. ( this was also my first time shooting an AR, and I like em alot too). So in order for me to get my toy, I figured I would build her one first, so that way its much much easier to get MY toy later.highly
So heres what I'm thinking so far:

I was thinking on a stag lower, I can't seem to find any bad press on em, and they are certainly priced right. Is there any need to put in a 2 stage trigger right off the bat? with both of us being new to AR's, will we even know the difference?

The upper is where I start getting a little swamped with options. I am thinking about a 20 inch barel, with a flat top reciever, so optics can be mounted. A chrome lined barrel for ease of cleaning and longetivity, and a small bipod up front. If anyone could suggest a complete upper, It would be greatly appreciated. My total build budget for this gun is around 800.00.  I have about a million other questions, but this post is already too wordy, so I will take what I learn from this and go from there.  Thanks all for the time!

First off welcome to ar15.com, and now on too your questions.

I would say if you are going to go for a varmint style build you would be very happy with a 2 stage. However sense your trying to keep a budget it is not neccesary but it will help alot. I would suggest a RRA 2stage, there about $85 last I cheaked.

Now for the upper I would say Chrome lined and Accurate usally do not go hand in hand, and sense your not going to be jumping into the sandbox/jungle with it I would say a Stainless would be the way to go. Besides it has the bling women like. CLICK ME <<<Here is what I would think you are looking for as far as a upper goes, I am sure if you cheak with the RRA dealers on this board you should be able to find a better price. I have also heard alot of great things about this upper, 1/8 twist will shoot about anything and with the wylde chamber you can shoot both 5.56/223.

I hope this helps you out some, you should be able to get pretty close to your $800 budget with this minus the optics/mount of course. Hunter121

Edited to add: If you buy a stripped lower you could always buy a 'kit' from HERE and it will include your LPK and buttstock assembley. All you have to do is put the lower together which is cake with the tacked thread above in this forum. This route would save you a few pennies.

Welcome the board.

For shooting targets I would agree with the stainless. I have a 20" RRA stainless and also have the 2 stage trigger. With the right loads it will do 1/2 MOA and under 1 MOA with almost any good load. I am not too sure about a 20" barrel for a lady though. If your SO feels she can handle a 20" model then go for it. If it is heavy to her then go with a 16". If it will be only off the bench it shouldn't matter but if some offhand is in the mix she will have more fun with something she can handle easily. Good Luck.

ETA: Be sure the length of pull for her is close. It will make her a better shot and not induce poor shooting form.

Congrats on finding a woman that likes to shoot...big bonus. Now, here is my take on your situation. Check out styles and prices of complete Rock River Arms rifles, that already come with NM triggers (2 stage) Yes, you will know the difference. Also, for the lady (and for yourself, for that matter) you will find that 16'' barrels are easier to handle and will plenty due the job out to 300 meters and beyond. Adco Good luck and enjoy.

RRA everything except the clips.  16" Stainless, 2 stage trigger, lightweight quad rail.  I bought it from Pete here on the forum.  I am very happy with everything, and it shoots great.  My total build cost was $1049, but it could be closer to your budget without the quadrail.

What clip? I see a mag but I don't see any clips.

Anyone familiar with Superior Arms?  How about KNS parts?  Is $600 for all parts a good price for an M4 rifle?  And $700 for a Varmint?  I have been shopping around and have been working on my build for over six months (waiting to save up money).

Superior Arms have good lowers. I have several and like them. The second hole for creep adjustment makes most (out of 6 I have only seen 1 it didn't help) stock triggers quite tolerable.

Can't help with KNS.

Your prices listed aren't bad but w/o knowing exactly what is priced can't say for sure.

You really should ask this question in your own thread with more details there so as not to hijack someone elses thread.

Thanks all for the responses, and the links too.

Are there any brands to stay away from in my parts adventure?

I figure that I will probably go a piece at time, gives my budget more time to recover Once I start getting pieces, I will post again, gonna do a bit more research, then get started.

I would say as long as you go with a known brand for your parts you should be good to go. If you go with a kit I would suggest Del-Ton or J&T distributing. Kits are usually the easiest way to go for the 1st build. If you want to jump right in to just getting parts I would say watch the Equipment Exchange. The USED section can build you a damn fine rifle if you are patient enough to wait around for the parts. If you have any questions about something let me know I will try and help you out the best I can. I am definitly not a guru at this stuff but I should be able to point you in the right direction. Go to the Indiana Hometown Forum and see if any one there lives close to you. There should be someone there who can give you a hand getting your rifle put together correctly.
