| I've got a strippd lower that needs a purpose. I've already got a vanilla .223 and am working on a 300BLK that will get a suppressor. What are my options for other calibers that I can build on this lower? I know there is some relatively new stuff out there, but I have no experience or exposure to any of it. Thanks in advance. |
| your painting with a broad brush . what do you want to do ? shoot prarie dogs at 400 yds or moose at 100 yds you could do . 17 remington , 204 ruger , 20 practical , 20 tactical 6.5 grendel , 6.8 remington , 375 socom , 450 bushmaster 458 socom , 50 beowulf and a butt full in between |

Read the Variant stickys on the different calibers.
The main ones that fit in the AR15 that have factory ammo support are: 6.5 Grendel 25-45 Sharps 277 Wolverine 204 Ruger 7.62x39 6.8 SPC 300 BLK 450 Bushmaster 458 SOCOM 50 Beowulf I personally am a big fan of the 6.5 Grendel based on the performance I see from it. It's a lot of fun to shoot, very low recoil, but hits hard on target outside of what people are used to from the AR15. When I shoot steel at a public range, heads literally turn over and people wonder how I'm hitting the 600yd steel so hard with a little Grendel carbine, that is a joy to shoot. |

Dont forget the .277 Wolverine. I can bang the steel at 600 with the 6.8 all day to. Many times 25 out of 25 times. With 110gr Hornady BTHP's and a 16in barrel. I to get the "what the heck are you shooting" walk ups. But hey, I'm a 6.8 fanboy. |

Thanks in advance. whats its purpose. Plinking, hunting bears and hogs at short range? Do you reload? those questions would have to be answered in advance of anyone being able to recommend anything. |

I'm probably leaning toward long range If you want the cartridge that takes the AR15 to totally new territory, both as a hunting cartridge, and intermediate-to-long range target rifle, then 6.5 Grendel is the best option right now. It's what you will start to compare everything else to, to include calibers that fit in larger actions even. That's what happened with me. I have many 5.56 carbines, as well as a .260 Rem. 5.56 covers my close range, high volume training. .260 Rem used to cover my long-range shooting. 6.5 Grendel is what I use most of the time for that now. Both my 16" 6.5 Grendel and 22" .260 Remington are supersonic well beyond 1000yds for me. The 16" with 123gr is that way out to over 1300yds at the lowest elevation I shoot at in my State, and the .260 Rem out to 1500yds. While I shoot a lot of long range, you rarely see shots that far out, and you need additional equipment to be able to spot hits well enough once you get into Extreme Long Range (ELR). Since Grendel factory ammo is so affordable, the recoil is so little, and it fits in the AR15, I really enjoy shooting it, especially with the on-target results being so similar to .308 Win, with less than half the recoil of the .308 Win. |

I always see people say they can bang steel at xxx yds what size of targets would be common at say 600-800 yds ? I have an 8 inch gong but mainly use it to practice fore pistol matches . |

I have an 8 inch gong but mainly use it to practice fore pistol matches . It's no fun to shoot large plates at the closer distances. A good rule of thumb is to have 2-4 MOA plates. So at 200yds, a 4-8" plate is more fun to shoot than an 18" plate, because there is no challenge to it all unless you just don't know how to shoot.. At 300yds, a 6-12" plate is more of a challenge. At 400yds, at least an 8", but 12" is fun and still challenging. At 500yds, 10" and higher. 600yds, 12" 700yds, this is where sils or 18" plates come into play. Run sils out to 1000yds. Once you start getting past 1000yds, go with 15" gongs, then 22" gongs for ELR at 1500yds and beyond. |

Here's 6.5 Grendel being rapid fired at 700yds on steel, which isn't much of a challenge. There are other videos of 6.5 Grendel being rapid-fired at 1000 and 1200yds on 8" and 15" plates. thanks for the info . like I said I use my 8 inch plate to practice shooting on the move with my 1911 and x-dm 5.25 . I just keep seeing people talk about hitting steel and was curious . I can see a 2 moa target being a challenge at an extended range . thanks again |

I have never measured it but believe its an 18in. Which in the wind is fun, and its always blowing here. I saw a guy one day banging it with open sights on an AK, which amazed me. |
