Probably just something you hear from people at a gunshop but I was roaming around with a friend who was buying his first AR at a fairly local shop. He was looking at Colt and Bushy. The colt was about 130 bucks more but the guy told him he wouldn't buy a colt because their quality is really poor compared to the new bushmasters.

I didn't really know what to say... it was the first time I've heard sales people putting over the cheaper product.

Is colt going downhill or something recently?

Sounds like the salesman being an ass. My newest Colt 1991 New Roll Mark pistol has arguably the best build quality of most 1911s out there for the $  spent. That being said, I haven`t handled a Colt Ar recently. But I doubt they would put out a product demonstrably poorer in quality than Bushmaster, or ArmaLite. YMMV

Colt has a history of ups and downs........

I don't think there are any real problems with recent Colts.

OTOH Bushmaster has a history of high quality.

You just have to be fond of purple, on occasion.

Sounds like just another gun retailer putting himself out of business with assinine comments. I went into a popular gun shop in my area and wanted to order a Rock River, and the salesman immediately said "Oh that's a parts gun". And then he went on to tell me how they just buy the parts from outsources and put them together. Then he wanted to sell me a Bushmaster. Duh! They're all parts guns idiot! is what I wanted to say, but I knew it was no use. Little did they know that I just spent 3 months researching Rock River and heard nothing but first hand testimonials to their quality. The irony is that I eventually bought a Bushmaster, but not from them! In addition to the knucklehead comments, they wanted about $300.00 more than anyone else!

The moral: Gun stores are still there own worst enemy, and I dread it whenever I have to go in one.

Not going downhill quality-wise, just cutting a few corners to save some $$$.

The salesman is full of it. My newest Colt is a 6400C built in 2003. It is the best performing AR I have ever owned. It also has outstanding fit and finish. Other owners of recent Colts seem to have similiar opinions.

If this dealer has an e-mail address, send him THIS LINK for him to learn about AR quality control. It's an excellent discussion that touches on the problems of most major AR builders including Colt, Bushy, Oly, Armalite etc. Some of the most respected names in the business sounded off in that thread.

It's a great read.

Colt isn't perfect, but plenty of experts agree that they are far less imperfect than other brands.

I have encountered many gun counter guys who are morons, and a few who knew their stuff. I would say the Bushy and the Hartford Horsie are of equal quality, all things considered.

I've seen cosmetic flaws with each, but less with the Colts. Then again, I see less Colts as well. From what little I have seen their quality is as good as anyone's and better than most. Their M4 model is probably the best M4 on the market in my opinion.

Colt went through a rough spell with QC, and they were dropped by more than a few places.  These same places often picked up Bushmaster as a replacement.  Bushmaster had pretty good looking guns at a time when some Colts weren't looking so hot.

The problem is that Colt has gotten themselves pretty squared away in the QC department, but the former dealers wouldn't know that because they are still selling Bushmaster.

Nothing is perfect, but my Colt has almost always been flawless. Then again, so has my Bushmaster as well as several of my other ARs...
