Hello Everyone,
I am starting work on building my new 6.5 Grendel AR. I am looking for a short light handy rifle/pistol for deer sized game and for shooting fun. Maybe one day ill work up to ranges approaching 500 yards but not for a while. I started this as a one place for talking about my build and getting advice as ive never built an AR before. I live in WA and hunt in the woods or along edges of clear cuts for deer so having a short rifle is useful. Also since I live in WA state I also have to deal with the mistake our state politicians made with the SBR laws. I can't put in the form 1 (I think its form 1) to manufacture an SBR. I can own and buy and all that which is weird but its where I am. That being said this will be a long road for 2 reasons: 1. I am in the Soviet Socialist Republic of California for work until sometime in the fall. 2. Financial I could spend 1500 on this build which is a LOT of money for me and I will be buying items and having them shipped to my brother back in WA state as I can afford. |

All that being said here's my choices right now for the direction I will take:
1. 12.5" pistol with the goal of pinning a suppressor on it eventually to make it reach 16". The biggest problem is that between this build is the cost of everything is high for me there wont be a lot of extra money for a while plus I'm also looking at a new pistol when I get home so it could be a year or more before I can afford one. 2. A 14.5" pinned rifle would meet 16" length but would start being longer and id have to ask myself about why I didn't get #3 at this point. 3. A 14.5" pinned PAR. I always liked pump action rifles so the PAR is like a dream come true. And with the folding stock would be pretty compact. However I would lose caliber conversions. I am thinking about a future big bore upper as well. I also have to take into account that if Faxon ever puts out their bullpup lower that I hear rumors about or if Kel Tec ever makes enough RDBs in grendel for me to think about affording one or if the MDR gets a grendel chambering I may sell it all and buy one of those. So ive got to think about resale as I will need the funds from the sale to purchase one of those. If anyone has any advice on what to do with for me id like that. Thanx |

My advise is to buy a Alexander Arms 16" fluted stainless steel barrel and build a upper with a light hand guard. Get a very good trigger like a Geissele and build your lower using any stock you prefer. Buy a quality optic and use a light weight one piece mount like Aero.
After you shoot this 6.5 Grendel you'll know if this is the cartridge and platform for you. If you don't like it you can easily sell the upper or parts you don't like. I like Bullpups but at this time I'm not sure the Bullpups have the inherent design to get the accuracy potential of the 6'5 Grendel. Bullpups are also expensive and you can build a very nice AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel cheaper than most bullpups. |
| One of the barrels I am looking at is from PF. The bolt they offer with the barrel is about the same price as a AA heavy use/duty (whatever its called). Besides convenience is there any reason to order it from them if I get the barrel? I'm sure its a match grade top of the lone bolt but I doubt ill see the difference between that and the AA bolt anytime soon. |
| Precision Firearms make great 6.5 Grendel barrels and bolts. Buy with confidence from PF especially if you can be patient. Mark and his wife had a new baby couple months ago which slowed production. I've read where several people just got their barrels they had on order. |
