If these were the only choices on the market what would you choose?

Elcan Specter DR - 1x / 4x
IOR Valdada Pitbull - 1x / 4x
4x ACOG with Docter mini red dot piggy backed
1-4x variable scope - pick a brand
Aimpoint or Eotech with magnifier

If I had the cash?

A Schmidt and Bender Short dot, or a Nightforce 1-4x20mm

Although you cannot beat the speed of an Aimpoint with a magnifier for longer range stuff...

For less weight, use an Aimpoint Micro, they work well for magnification as well

I've toyed around with red dots mounted on magnified optics and add on magnifiers and find them both to be undesirable. I'd probably go for a variable. The Pitbull looks awesome.

This.

If it's for my current situation I'd go with what I have now, an Aimpoint and no magnifier.

ACOG, but go with one of the Trijicon dot optics over the Dr. Optic.
The mounts are less expensive and the Trijicon is just as good as the Dr. Optic.

Short to medium range. Hopefully nothing more vital than 3-gun competition, but in a SHTF situation do you ever know what the mission will be? I want the best all-purpose option i.e. one solution to work in the most possible situations.

I am leaning towards the 1x / 4x switchable and specifically the Pitbull over the Elcan because of cost. I just don't care for variable focus, I like aimpoint but I prefer a single unit. The ACOG seems like a possible option but you have to raise your head to use the red dot.

The ELCAN is me favorite!  Great optics, great reticle, the illumination is outstanding (You can illuminate the whole cross hair for lowlight shooting or just illuminate just the dot.  The Dot gets as bright as an Aimpoint), extremely well made, and the 1x to 4x flip switch illumination is very, very nice to have.

I have not used the IOR 1x4x but we will be geting some.

I have an aimpoint with a magnifier in a LaRue flip to side mount and it is awsome, so I voted accordingly, ...

But I see no option for an ACOG with a T-1 micro on a 45 angle mount which I really like as well. It's very pricey, but it ROCKS!

I run both an EOTech and Aimpoint with magnifier.  I've tried the red dot over ACOG thing, and I couldn't stand having to change my cheek weld for different distance shooting.  1 cheek weld for all shooting applications on my AR!

I am interested in checking out the Pit Bull when it comes out.  The Elcan looks nice but for that kind of money I expect a life time warranty not one year.  Hell even the weaver 1X-3X that sells for $150 has a life time warranty.  Any ways I think a 1X-4X is the way to go.
