Hi all,

This past weekend I finally gave in to the urge to buy a gun ( figured its better to get my collection started before my wedding in a few months ). I sat down and talked about it with my Fiance in advance just to make sure I didn't get into any fights over it. I also made it clear in advance what  I wanted to get. Initially I was looking at just getting an AR 15 kit and building one from parts. I didn't so much mind the wait that I felt like I was going to be in for, but after talking with another customer in a local gun store this past weekend I got the impression I should look at a ready made gun for my first. I looked around at the selection they had and was impressed by a tricked out AR they had on the wall listed for $1,495. In talking with the other customer he explained that he too had one and explained a few of things I could potentially run into going with a kit.
The $1,495 they wanted was more than I wanted to spend but after figuring out how much really goes into these to get the kit ready ( Scope, Sight, Floating Rail, Etc ) I figure I could spend more up front, in the hopes of saving some in the long run. I told the store owner I would take it and went home to get some paperwork and would be back. We called a buddy who owns and is familiar with the AR15 and he indicated that given the market the price offered was not that bad for what they had. I ended up bring home a DPMS Panther. The descriptions below are what I have seen visually and some additional information about the barrel after I called and talked with DPMS to see what  I had based on the serial number on the receiver.

According to a guy from DPMS my gun is pretty much a Panther Bull Sweet 16

I can see that it has the following options visually.

AIM Point CompML2 4 MOA mounted on a ARMS 17 Tri Lock Mount.

A Harris Ultra Light Bipod Series 1A-2 Model L

GG&G Vertical Grip

Surefire M73 Picatinny Rail.

Browning Tactical k2 Light.

I do have many questions but here are few ( I saw that I need a paid membership here to fully use the site functions ) I will get that set up shortly.

I explained to them that the barrel seemed alot thicker than the barrel on the DPMS my friend has. I was told that  I had a Stainless Bull barrel. I was confused because by barrel has a flat black finish. They explained to me that some people order the SS Barrel with Teflon coating on the outside. Is this normal ?

The stock on the end looks like an adjustable one, but is fixed. I spoke with DPMS about this and they confirmed that some states regulate the length of the stock ( or perhaps overall gun length ??? ). I asked them if I want to replace it with a 6 point adjustable must I also replace the tube, spring and everything ?

The DPMS site states this gun is chambered for 223. From what I am learning, this means 5.56 would fit but is not recommened because of the higher gas pressure / velocity  ? Do I have this right ?

Can someone recommend a free an easy to use hosting for online pictures, if so I will try and get some pictures up by this weekend.

Thanks Guys

Pete

Welcome!

It sounds like you picked up a nice rifle. The only issue I could see is the bull barrel. It sounds like you have "fighting" type rifle, but the added weight of that barrel. Plus it's only marked for .223.

You can change the stock, but will need a new extension. I'm not sure what spring and buffer are used in it. I'm sure that if you picked up a complete stock assembly, you'll be good to go.

Photobucket is a decent photo hosting service.

Yes, a Team Membership will make surfing the site much easier if you spend a lot of time here.

What part of VA are you from?

Make sure you stop by the VA Hometown Forum and say hi.

Congrats,

This must be a used rifle correct? What store did you buy it from. From your post it sounds like this might be your first firearm. If thats the case, make sure you know your 4 weapons safety rules...

TREAT - every weapon as if it were loaded
NEVER - point a weapon at anything you do not intend to destroy
KEEP   - your finger straight and off the trigger until your ready to fire
KEEP   - your weapon on safe until your ready to fire

My humble advice would be to strip off all the fancy gadgetry and learn to shoot this rifle as a basic rifle, then you can move up to aimpoints and bipods and such. Have fun and buy ammo.

Thanks for the response guys, Yes it says 223 -5.56 on the side of gun. Am I correc in reading that if something is stated as being chambered for 223 it means that you should stick with that round because of the pressure limitations ? Pardon my ignorance but if that is the case why state 223-5.56 on the side and not just 223 ?

Thanks

Yes, the first gun I have owned. Thus far I have been limited to going to the range with a few buddies that have pistols. I certainly follow the basic safety rules. Your spot on about the comment with all the extra gear being taken off. I left the Aimpoint on because I have no other sight yet. My goals at this point are to make sure I can be comfortable taking it apart, cleaning it, reassembling and it before going with the afore mention freind and get some training at the NRA HQ that is close by. Once I get that far and when I'm ready I'll show my brother ( Lt Col USMC ) and get him to give me some further pointers on using it. Yes, the gun is used but according to several people it was probably less that 100 rounds or so ( if that ) . I purchased the gun from Dominion Arms in Centerville, VA.

Thanks for the advice !!

having .223 5.56 on reciever tells what it it could be built for. It all depends
on the barrel. You can have a .223 barrel and only shoot that round
or have a 5.56 barrel and shoot both 5.56 and .223.

Most people have their gun much longer than their wife.  So take care of it and her too.
