Well here is the start of my new project. It is a 1966/1967 era upper receiver. I have the pistol grip and buttstock too. The buttstock I have is the later period solid stock so I am not sure if I will use it or try to hunt down an older one. I also have a chrome carrier to use on it. it is in my XM177E2 right now but I will look to replace it and use the chrome one in this build. I think I will also get rid of the bird cage and use a three prong hider on it.

Partial fence lower receiver, three prong flash hider, non-trapdoor stock, chrome bolt carrier, unlined 1x12" barrel, ahh yes, the XM-16E1!  Looks like a great start you've got there, and reminds me that I too must clone one of those rifles.

Yep, got all of that but the lower and the flash hider. Still, the buttstock I have is the later one with the rubber coate sing swivil. I know the earlier ones had a sligght different shape to them so should I hold out for an earlier one or just strip the rubber off of the one I have now and use it?

I would put your current one on that so you can use the gun until you can get a correct butt stock.

Ok, well... Does anyone know where to find the older buttstocks then? Anyone with a supply of them out there? I, of course, will be checking the EE as well.

I was going to use a rull pin, but which swivil should I use? Rubber coated or bare? I guess I should go with a rubber coated one to match the buttstock right?

I would use a rubber coated one that had half to three quarters of the rubber still on it.

Thanks, I have an extra rubber coated one in the parts bin right now. I believe the rool pin I use to hold the front one on is a trigger guard roll pin. That is what I have on my XM177 I believe.

Trigger guard roll pin is not appropriate.

A tip, I came about spare front swivel and roll pins by buying up old cheap buttstocks, and stripping them for parts.

Should it be longer? What size should it be? I realy do not want to get some more buttstocks and strip them down.

Doesn't look like there's any forge flash on the back of that FSB. What's the deal there?

From Ekie's tacked M16 guide:

"The first version of the forged front sight base was machined smooth to remove forging flash and used on M16 and XM16E1 rifles, and on the M16A1 for a time. Production started as early as 1964, and was used as late as 1969."
