Hello Everyone. New guy here. Am shopping for my first AR. Lots of choices makes it complicated. I have several other firearms, but no AR. I would like to get everyone's input about the direction I am considering. I also have a few questions. Everyone says this is the place to go for AR info.
Use of AR Mostly keep my safe filled up with range use and some plinking out in the desert. I am not in LE or other tactical work. Type of Shooting I am not a fast shooter and tend to find myself looking to hit smaller targets. I enjoy scopes and reaching out but due to a number of factors this AR will probably not get much use past 200 yards. Too far to walk and my eyes aren't much good at long distance with open sights. Mods I intend I will replace the trigger to a nice 3 or 4 lb single stage. I don't need a battle rifle trigger. I figure a couple hundred for a drop in trigger. I am also considering getting a 2x7 scope. Seems with the capability of the 223 round, that would be a nice range. Eventually, over the source of a year or two, I may buy another upper. One upper with stock sights for closer shooting and the second upper with the scope. Proposed AR At first I was considering the MP15 sport ($700) and thought it would be a good shooter with the scope and new trigger for maybe $1200. I don't need the dust cover or FA. I have read good things about the R5 rifling. have heard it is more accurate then the colt? What do you think of this option? Second Option BUT the more I read, maybe I should get the Colt 6920. Yes, it is better, and I do not yet own a Colt so it would be nice to add one, but I figure it is about $500 more and given my use I don't know if it is worth it. Kinda feel like I would be paying for the name which may be worth it. I don't sell guns so this may be my son's someday. But, Maybe I would be further ahead if I put the $500 to get a Marlin lever in 357/38 that is also on my want list. I am also having a hard time locating a 6920. I am in no rush so I have time to shop and wait for prices to keep dropping. I have heard they can be had for $1000, but have not seen that to be the case. Other questions. If I take off the scope, and then put it back on, will it hold zero? Are folding sights on the S&W or Colt any good or are they worth keeping. I like a tight peep sight. I like the idea of the aluminum handguard on the colt over the plastic S&W. I also like the carry handle look, but don't know much about its functionality. Thanks for the input. |
| Get a good scope mount. If u go with a larue lt104 it will retail zero no problem. If I were you I'd build my own rifle. You get more satisfaction from building than you do buying, you get to build to suit your needs and you don't waste money replacing parts. You said shooting small targets is what you will be doing why not build a 18" spr clone? I built one and consistently get 3/4 Moa. I also spent considerably less than what a new colt rifle would cost after upgrading it. |
| The m&p sport was my first AR. It was a great starter rifle to get me into the AR world. no complaints and shoots great. you can't go wrong with either option, but i think you will be fine with the sport and use the extra money you would spend on the colt and get a decent scope. the sport came with magpul BUIS and you can always change the hand guard on the sport to something different. |

I also like the carry handle look, but don't know much about its functionality. I learned to shoot with the carry handle, so I'm impartial to it. I use an LMT rear sight now, which is just a chopped down carry handle. Once you learn how to adjust for wind and elevation, they're very accurate. You can hit body size targets from 500 yards in the prone with ease with the carry handle. I can't vouch for the folding type sights (I've never used them) but I'm sure they're just as good. Just based on the title of your post, I was going to come in here and recommend a Colt. I'm impartial to Colt as well, but I can assure you you'll never be able to break one. They're virtually indestructible. I have a 6721 now (same as the 6920 but with a heavy barrel). If you don't mind the extra weight you can pick one up slightly cheaper than the 6920. I think for the price (which isn't really that bad) and the quality, Colts are great. |

Good input. Thanks. I thought about that but I have held a couple that people built (not shot) and they were so lose that it was maybe not so good. There was a bunch of slop between the upper and lower and it rattled. That may have just been these builds. The DD and other new rifles I have held were tighter so I thought maybe if the upper and lower comes from the same factory they are fit better.
Is this true? Can a rifle be built tight? I like the idea of building one since I could then just buy the trigger I like and barrel I like. I still want it to be a bit of a do everything gun, but I do like the clarity of a scope. Don't want a heavy bull barrel bench rest only gun. I have swapped trigger parts on my other guns. |

Buy a blaster and then build an accurate upper with a stainless barrel.
Daniel Defens M4V3 This is cheaper than adding parts to a 6920 to finish it out, and midlength is nicer, if for no reason than having more room for your hand. Then put a custom upper on backorder or have one built from parts. This one looks good: Rainier Arms Ultramatch 16 custom upper I really like the Centurion Arms C4 rail, having recently tried one for the first time. And the RA Ultramatch barrels are as good as button rifled barrels get. Then add a trigger. Two stage is great for accuracy work and far better in a carbine for running and gunning than single stage. I will only use Geissele triggers... Geissele SSA |

Thanks Combat Jack. You are out of my price range though. Too much money for me. I am married and I only get as left overs what the wife I had to try, I evangelise the fancy parts around here.
Buy a GOOD but feature free blaster. When the time comes don't skimp on the precision gun. The reports I've seen from the Smith Sport models are 2" groups, and that's hardly precision. Good blaster though. |
