Just completed my first build and took out to the farm to shoot. Pulled the trigger and the pin struck the round, no shoot. Cycled another round, it fires, next round no shoot. It appears the trigger is not striking the firing pin strong enough to fire the round; what should I look for?

Did you try the ammo in another rifle?

make sure the springs on the hammer and trigger are installed correctly, check to see if the disconnecter spring is upside down, also check firing pin protrusion from the face of the bolt

I did have the Spring up side down but still no go. This is all new components, could the firing pin be tight and need to be loosened? Any other ideas? To the first response, this is the only 223 riffle I have for now

The firing pin floats, it shouldn't be tight at all. What brand LPK/springs are you using?

Fixed it! Went back and looked and when reinstalled installed hammer Spring backwards as well. Duh! Like I said it was my first build I'll know for the next ONES!
Thank you,

That's how we learn!
Now go shoot it and let us know how she performs.

Make sure the disconnector spring is installed in the trigger as well. It's one of the most commonly overlooked parts.

BTDT. If I don't work on a FCG for 6 months or so, it is almost all new to me.

Here's a Fire Control Group sequenced assembly checklist that can help someone out in the future:

After Pivot Pin, magazine catch, and bolt catch have been installed (not necessary, but just what I do, in that order with specific tools for each)....

* Properly attach trigger return spring to the trigger

* Insert disconnector spring in trigger with the large end of the spring down

* Place the disconnector into the trigger (if you have a slave pin, captivate the disconnector in the trigger now)

* Lower the trigger and disconnector into the fire control housing of the lower receiver, checking that there is no binding against the inside of the receiver walls.

* From the left side of the lower receiver, Insert one of your trigger/hammer pins into the trigger pin hole, starting with the uninterrupted portion of the pin.

* While aligning the trigger holes with the pin holes, lightly tap the pin through with a punch. If you don't have a slave pin for the disconnector, this will be "fun".

* Ensure the trigger pin is centered depth-wise in the lower, and that the notched side is presented for the hammer spring to engage.

* Correctly attach the hammer spring to the hammer. (Ensure that the hammer has the J spring in the center of it. This part prevents hammer pin walking.)

* With the hammer spring legs over the trigger pin, lower the hammer into the FCG area while compressing the hammer spring until the hammer notch engages the trigger nose. Keep the hammer compressed with one hand, while reaching for your hammer pin.

* Insert the hammer pin, smooth end first, into the hammer pin hole. Tap it through using finesse, not force, with a brass hammer.

At this point, trouble-shoot the function of the trigger. Using your hand as a guard over the cocked hammer, pull and HOLD the the trigger to the rear, releasing the hammer into your hand. Push the hammer back down while still holding the trigger back. The hammer should positively engage the disconnector.

* Release the trigger. The hammer should not fall, and there should be a metallic click sound.

* Insert the safety/selector. You can trouble-shoot SAFE/FIRE function at this point. If it passes, move on to installing the pistol grip, selector spring and detent. I mount the lower in the vice upside down for this stage (using vice insulators).
