I read an article about the "blue" extractor spring in the AR-15 not being too goog, and that some people are moving to the heavy duty extractor spring and black insert. Is this something I need to look into? Im currently not having any visible problems, but it's a new carbine, so Im not sure. help me out please.

The problems described in some articles refer to the 14.5 inch barrel M4's having some extraction problems due to the shorter barrel. The inserts color was changed only to indicate the spring was the newer heavier model. Most AR15/M16 users don't seem to have a problem with the standard spring. Extra power springs are available from Wolff Gunsprings.

The extractor spring upgrade consists of 2 parts, the heavy duty spring W/black insert and the rubber D or O ring.

All M4s were converted to the HD spring w/black insert.  Only M4A1's (Full Auto) need the D or O ring.  This is the current guidance from Crane.  What units outside of USSOCOM are doing I have no idea.

With a 16in Civ M4 I would say dont change it if it works.
