Ok, so i am new to the AR pistol and want one.
I am looking to buy the upper kit from model 1. and a stripped lower from a local manufacture called AFM. Any special tools that I will need? Who has experience with the Model 1 product? Anything that is a must have, or useless? Thanks and appreciate any and all comments and support. |
Congrats and welcome to the site. You'll find much here so look around.
As to AR pistol builds, I 'm sure someone will be along soon. I do have a S&W .22 AR pistol and I do know due to SBR rules you DO NOT want to add anything to the buffer tube. I believe there is a special pistol buffer tube that can't have any stock put on it. Like i said othe rwill have more info for you soon. Don't forget to post pics of your build. |

Welcome to the site. Please send all team members in IL a dozen doughnuts When dealing with Model 1 - be sure that barrel is chambered with what you want. Many come chambered in .223 - which can be an issue if you want to shoot 5.56. 5.56 chamber is GTG for both. Other than that sticking point, no issues. Decent gear for cost but you may want to check out the EE before buying anything. |

Quoted: Great. Thanks for the advice. Still looking at the Model 1 5.56 kit. I saw that it comes with the pistol buffer tube. Will that be an issue? I have read that some have experienced issues with the pistol buffer and had to change it out to a rifle buffer tube. And some have had no issues at all. Best thing I can tell you is this - Keep it Simple. Don't spend extra money to fix problems you do not have - save that money to fix anything that comes up during testing. Or save that money to 'nice it up' later on. Or save that money to do build two - correcting the mistakes of build one. Especially if this is a first build - AR is not rocket science, but not exactly paint by numbers either. Take your time and have fun! |

A nice set of punches helps line everything up. A small hammer is required to drive in the roll pins. A castle nut wrench if you use something other than a RRA buffer tube. The tool to put in the front pivot pin spring and détente will pay for itself in aggravation and lost detentes. Buy two LPKs to start with or you will be waiting for springs and détente for come in the mail and spending a lot on shipping for 6 dollars worth of parts. A spare LPK makes a great field repair kit if you don't loose anything during your first build. At the very least buy a spring kit and a pin kit. If you grip screw is a hex you need a long hex driver.
You will get a lot of satisfaction doing this yourself and you will have the confidence to fix you own gun if anything ever breaks. Good Luck |
