I think im going to be in the market for an AR here pretty soon, Im also new to AR's. I did read the thread "so you want to buy an AR" thread lots of good info there.

I want to stay in the range of 1k, can you recommend some good rifles in that range? Whats the difference between an AR and a m4 type rifle?
I seen a bushmaster MOE for about 1k is that a good rifle?

If you want to have fun and own an AR, build it yourself.

its rewarding, you get exactly the features you want, and it's more economical in the long run.

the M4 is the full auto military rifle that has M4 feedramps machined into the upper, M4 feedramp barrel extension and the M4 profile "stepped" 14.5" barrel to attach the M203 grenade launcher.

You will find M4 feedramps are just about standard on most uppers now. M4 profile barrels are usually only 16" and 14.5"

Check out the classifieds to get an idea of real world parts cost(i.e. not retail) and shop around. there is plenty of rifle to be had for $1k-less

In the 1k range right now i personally like the S&W MP VTAC at palmetto state armory for $1099.

VTAC handguard
1:7 Chrome lined
VLTOR Modstock
Mounted Surefire G2
JP trigger

pretty good deal.  If i bought factory rifles I would scoop one up.

Welcome to the forum. For a first AR I don't think you can go wrong with one from Spike's Tactical. I don't have one but they are highly regarded both for quality and price.  AR-15 is used to refer to the whole family of AR, M16 types, of which the M4 is a variant.

Get a quality, BASIC, carbine or rifle.  I emphasize the basic because if you buy a rifle already kitted-out, you will probably want to change a lot of the stuff on it within a few trips out with it.

Under $1,000 Spikes Tactical is probably going to be your best bet.  You could spend a few bucks more on a BCM, but that puts you close to Colt territory anyways.

And as said previously, the basic terminology that you are questioning are:

Rifle: 20"+ barrel

Carbine: 16" barrel or shorter.  The M4 is a carbine with a 14.5" barrel, but is a generic term in most circles to many guns in this class.

Midlength:  Think of this as a carbine with a slightly longer handguard and gas tube.  Slightly softer shooting than carbine.  Less common and gaining popularity.

Carbine is probably best place to start with AR's in my opinion.  Lots of options.  Good prices.

Can i suggest just sitting here and reading all of the posts in the forum for the next week or so?  I say this because you shouldn't make a purchase like this just based on 1 threads worth of information.  You should research this thing to the point where YOU could be answering these questions for people.  And not just taking peoples opinions on whats good or not.  There is a lot of misinformation out there and most of it is based on peoples bias towards their favorite brands.

Thats the only way to be assured that you are making the right choice based on what you value and your needs and your own opinions.

There is a wealth of knowledge on here... much more than just this one thread will give you.

6920 is the proverbial gold standard in carbines.  You would be hard pressed to beat it at any price.  $1099 is a great price, especially if you have one sourced locally.

I too think you should readas mcuh as you can.  The spikes rifles are gtg but a Colt 6920 would be the bees knees.
