Okay folks. I"m new to the whole AR set up. I'm used to shooting competition Remington Model 700's chambered for a .300 WinMag and I figured it's time to go for a short rage piece. I'm not looking to spend a lot of cash (I figured about $600-$700 sounds reasonable.) I'm looking for a setup with a 16" barrel chambered in a 5.56 round. What would you folks recommend? Looking forward to some fun shooting. Thanks in advance...

for the money, I'd have to agree.
I've spent way more on rifles that were not any better.

Legal Transfers has a good deal on a Stag kit even has back up irons and a 30rd magazine.
Model 1 Sales has various 16" kits.
Del-Ton Many Kits.
I suggest paying the extra for a chrome lined barrel as it adds tot eh reliability and ease of cleaning. I'd also suggest sending the trigger out to Bill Springfield @ [email protected] for a trigger job as the stock trigger isn't too clean.

You will need a lower:
Gunsmoke Ent. has a special going.
Essential Arms also inexpensive.
Anvil Arms inexpensive + free laser engraving!
Coleman Tyler/Mega just plain cool and awesome quality, I have one.

Gunbroker.com FFL Finder to find a dealer to ship the lower to.

CMMG Bargain Bin rifles have been discontinued.

My vote is for a Stag 2 (front sight, flat top), Stag 2T (same as Stag 2 but with FF quad rail), or Stag 3 (same as Stag 2 but with a railed gas block instead of a front sight).  Simple and very dependable.

I bought a Stag 3 upper from ar15sales.com, a semi-complete Stag lower from Rainier Arms, and small misc. parts from other sources.  For example, I added Brownells Flip Up sights, a Phantom 5C2 flash suppressor, and a Magpul CTR stock.  I'm very happy with it.

If you don't want a deer head on your lower, go to the EE and pick out a lower with a different rollmark.  For the most part, most lowers are the same.
