When I put my rifle together, I went with a 16" stainless steel heavy barreled upper from RRA. I set it up as my SHTF rifle, with Konus 1-4 scope, nice flashlight up front, etc. It's a heckuva lot more accurate than I am! Now, I think I want to change things around a bit. I'd like to take the BUIS and optics off this upper, and install a low-profile gas block, free-float tube, and higher-power scope. If I do, I'll want a lightweight upper to mount all my SHTF stuff on. Does anybody make an inexpensive, lightweight mid-length upper? If not, what kind of cost am I looking at when it comes to buying the barrel, upper, and upper parts separately, and assembling them? Aside from an action block, what other tools would I need? Thanks! |

RRA also have lightweight barrels in carbine and midlength gas systems but they only have 1:9 twist for about $245.
For lightweight rails take a look at Troy, Viking Tactics-Troy, and Samson, etc. Aside the action block you would need an armorers barrel wrench to install the barrel nut, then just allen wrenches to install those lightweight rails. Take a look at the detailed instructions here at the Build It Yourself forum tacked thread ... Assemble Your Own Lower, Upper, Freefloat, Trigger, Gas Block - Step by Step Instructions! - link The prices of other components needed like upper receiver complete assembly, BCG, CH, and BUIS varies so just look at the Equipment Exchange and shop around for good bargains there. BCM does. They are out of stock at the moment, but are supposed to have many in production. They do have the cold hammer forged carbine uppers in stock, but those are another $85 over the standard models. They come in mid-length and carbine gas system lengths. Carbine generally feels lighter because the FSB is not so far out on the barrel, but kicks more. Midlength is typically smoother shooting. $385. Bring your own bolt carrier, handguards, and rear sight.
