Hello Everyone, Ok, for starters I’m new to the forum…… so don’t bash me too badly! I need some advice or direction on purchasing a rail system or forend system “I hope I’m saying this correctly” for my Colt 6920…. Which brand or product do you think is the best, or which have you used and is the most reliable, strongest, etc. If you could also post some pictures of your rail system’s or forend with your comments, it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks…. |

WElcome to the boards. Since you're new you should start by getting familiar with the different sections, expecially on the AR15 board, and pay attention to the threads that are 'tacked' at teh top of each forum. For example: FAQ: The Big Thread On FF & Railed Forends |

WG, Welcome to the board. The first step is probably figuring out how much you have to spend. After that, figure whether you want a free floating rail or not. There are many styles and different types of rails. I tend to stick with Daniel Defense for my duty and training weapons, as they are the lightest rail available, as well as one of the highest quality. I'll get some pictures up for you in a minute, and I'll try to limit them all to 16" carbines to give you a better idea of how it would look on yours. |
If you get the impression that Stick likes DD, its just coincidence.  As others have stated, figure out a price range, free float or not, length... There are tons of variables to consider. Spend some time looking through the forum and you will find all the information that you need - and some that you don't. OMHO Stickman answered all your questions with his pictures. Thanks for the replies…. To be honest price isn’t an issue, the most important thing would be durability, usability, and quality. What is the difference between free float or not “meaning, which one is the best” and what would you guys consider on a duty weapon? |
A free float rail doesn't contact the barrel, so in theory it is more accurate. For LE work, the little bit of difference may or may not be a big deal depending on where you work, what you do, and ammo issued. The free float rails won't move or shift, which is nice for items you may be mounting. The DD 7.0 Lite is what is pictured, but the newly released DD 9.5 Lite extends a bit past the front sight base, which will reduce shadowing if you are running a light. I may switch to that down the road, or I may drop one onto my secondary/ training carbine. Below is my duty weapon (city cop). I recommend what I carry because I know for a fact that it works.

If price was not an issue, I would get a a DD 9.0 Lite with a Samson flipup front BUIS, or a DD 7.0 Lite with the standard FSB. The light rail has the positive features of a monolithic rail, but if damaged it can be removed instead of having to scrap the entire upper. TS |
TS, Its a Colt 6721 barrel. One of these days its going to find its way to a lathe, but for now its just another Hbar. |
TS, I would highly recommend a standard front sight base for a patrol/ duty carbine. With that in mind, the DD 9.5 Lite rail has been released, and it is mighty nice.

Mine is coming back with its original DD 7.0 and a standard FSB. If I ever build another 14.5, it will probably have a 9.0 Lite or 12.0 Lite with the Samson on the rail. (just for play). The 6271 barrel threw me...  TS |
The YHM won't be loose and funky unless it's installed incorrectly, but if you can bite the bullet, the DD is worth it. TS |
