I've never shot an AR-15.  I've shot a variety of pistols in different calibers  - glock, HK, Sig, Beretta, Smith

I've read several forums and seen a lot of Brand X vs. Brand Y opinions.  People tend to highly tout Colt and other high-end companies.  In my area, Bushmaster, DPMS, Stag, Smith and Wesson, and Rock River are the easiest to find - when they are actually on the shelf that is.

Here's my question - is Colt so much better than these others? I read in one thread that Colt was the only serious battle rifle compared to the others that I mentioned. I want to know exactly why it is so much better.  How about some specifics.  Why should I spend so  much more on a Colt?

Any of the "big" names are going to be fine IMO - it's not any different than Levi's vs. Wranglers vs. Lee yada yada yada. I own or know people that own every brand of AR mentioned in your thread - They are all nice rifles, shoot well and function as they are supposed to. I love my Smith and haven't had any problems with it at all through about 3,000 or so rounds. My dad has a DPMS with 15,000 rounds or more through it and the only problem he's ever had was ammo related. Buddy has a RRA with 2,000 rounds through it without any problems.

Buy what you like and can afford from any of the makers listed in your thread and you will be fine.

Here's "The Chart".

In depth discussion of the above chart  explained much better than I could ever hope to.

Thank you very much for your help. The chart and link were very informative.  Do you have enough information about Rock River to include them on an updated chart?

If you just pull out the rifle for occasional fun, there is no reason.

If you use it to protect life and limb, Colts have been shown to be much less likely to fail when run hard.   Go through the tacked thread What Parts Break during a Carbine Course for some reasons why.

Colts seem to hold their resale value better too. That said, I have three Colt's,  some LMTs (Lowers and uppers not necessarily together), a Noveske, Sabre, a Bushy lower(LMT upper) and a Mark 18 SBR build using a DPMS lowera and CMMG upper. Couple of RRAs. They all shoot fine
