I'm planning on building an AR soon. I was lucky to find a friend who sold me a Stag Arms stripped lower reciever. When we were at our local gun shop to complete the gun transfer, I noticed in the side of the lower was inscribed "CAL 6.02". What does this mean? Can I still shoot 223 or 556 rounds? Or is this lower something different? Thanks for any info on this. I would have posted a pic but i'm waiting to get it back from the gun shop.

if you're serious, let me assure you any stripped lower may be built to  fire any caliber from any upper that will fit on it.
i qualify  the "may be built to" beacause the single shot .50 bmg bohica  can't have a buffer.
and the pistol calibers need mag adapter work.
i seriously doubt your stag says that, and if it does, its probably mis-stamped.
if you're pulling a leg, hey what fun that was..

Not joking,.. Why would I post this question and claim that I'm a newbie?

I thought it was strange myself when I saw that. I've been researching ARs online for a while and never seen that kind of caliber marking before.

Like I said I wish I could post a picture but it's in the hands of my local gun shop for the next 10 days. Once I get it back, I'll post it.

If it's a 5.56/.223 pattern lower then, yes, you can shoot those rounds using that lower. It doesn't matter which cal is stamped on the lower as caliber markings are not a required marking. If it's a 7.62x51/.308 pattern lower then, no, you cannot use 5.56/.223. Does it look like a standard 5.56/.223 lower???

Once I get it back, how do I tell? Is there something I can measure or is there some kind of determining way to know the difference?

It's my first lower so I don't really know, but it does look like a standard 223/556 lower.

Could you post some photos of the lower?

Put a regular AR mag in it.

Ok, my bad and sorry to confuse all that responded to my post. Looks like I was wrong on the marking on the side of my lower. Here's what it looks like:

I'm still a little confused why it says "cal 6.8 cal"? Does that mean i have any limitations on the type of ammo that I can use? I plan on using 2.23 and 5.56 rounds.

6.8 uses as standard AR lower so you'll be fine to slap a 5.56 or .223 upper on that.

Oh ok... I'm starting to figure this out. The lower doesn't really matter so much but the barrel does. What about the upper? Does that have any bearing on what type of ammo you can shoot?

You shoot which caliber is stamped on your barrel. Stamped 5.56 or Wylde? You can shoot 5.56 or .223. Stamped .223? You should only shoot .223.

Barrel and bolt make the caliber.  Also, there are only certain calibers that can go onto the 5.56 Multi lowers.  There is a thread 2-3 pages back that cover this.  Please read.
