So, I've just purchased my first AR and from what I've heard, it probably won't be my last.  I've acquired the Daniel Defense DDM4 V5 and of course, it came with no sights.  I read the intro article and understand the various options however, as excellent as the article is, it doesn't really help me with what type of sight I want/need under specific conditions.  So, I purchased a set of DD front and rear fixed that, per everything I read, will operate as BUIS so I think I've got step one handled.  My question then becomes, what are steps 2 and 3?

I'm thinking that the next option is a red dot which I gather is for mid distance use, up to maybe 100 yds?  Anything longer would require a magnification sight?

I'll throw in one other consideration and that's my eyesight isn't all that great, even with my contacts, so I need to be sure I can see through what I get with some adjustment for diopter correction.  i don't know if that's something to impact the choice, maybe red dot isn't ideal under poor vision. But hopefully you all know what I need to think about.

I'm not necessarily looking for specific brand or model recommendations, although I'll take them if given.  I've been around these gun forums enough to know everyone has their opinions and the bottom line is I need to pick what works for me.   I'm really just trying to get some ideas about what type of optics to be researching and planning to acquire and why I should buy one type over another.  And since I know you'll ask, figure the use of the weapon is first defensive, second target and third hunting.

Thanks in advance and let the discussion begin.

Red dots are generally not good for people with poor vision and astigmatism. The next question would be what ranges do you plan to shoot at? and what is your budget>

Thanks for the reply.  Budget is flexible but not unlimited.  Snooping without really knowing what i want, probably need to keep it under $500 but I'd rather not spend that much unless I have to.

Ranges probably between 100-200 yards at the outdoor range.  Obviously in defensive mode much closer and if I do take it hunting, I try to keep it under 200.  I'm good to about 300 with my .270 bolt.

As for the eysight, you nailed it, near-sighted with old guy reading glasses, astigmatism, and a little keratoconus to boot.  I'm a mess.

I'm in the same boat.  Shooting out to 100yards.  Would something with a little magnification be a good idea?

Consider the vortex sparc red dot and the vortex 3x flip to side magnifier. You will have both a red dot "reflex" sight for up close and dirty as well as the ability to go 200+ yards with the magnifier . All within your budget.

Thanks much Tackdriver.  This looks like something that could fit the bill.  I find it interesting that the magnifier is more expensive than the sight itself.  I'll have to see if I can hunt this down at a local shop to look it over.

Go with a red dot and magnifier or something like a 1-4 scope. Primary arms makes a good 1-4 for 120 bucks

yes. really depends on what you're shooting at and from, my eyesight sucks and a red dot is fine for minute of man A-zone hits but if I want to make a hit within a 2" to 3" diameter at 100 yards then I want some magnification.

I'm in the same boat with the both of ya's. Severe astigmatism, with corrective lenses. Using irons or an unmagnified red dot past 100 yards (unless it's a larger steel target) is out of the question.

However, I don't have ANY problems with either Aimpoint, EOTech, or Trijicon RMR red dots and HWS. I also have a Vortex SF, a Lucid HD7, and some others kicking around. I can see the dots and reticles just fine.

I've a lot to learn. Did not know you could magnify a red dot. Newbie that I am.

best to get an Aimpoint with a  2 MOA dot or eotech if you plan on magnify it. for me the 4 MOA dot is to big when magnified.

EOTech's are 1 MOA dot. Works great with their G33 3x magnifier, but it does become a 3 MOA dot, which is OK out to 200 yards. After that it gets increasingly imprecise.

If you can spring for it, a TA31F ECOS ACOG will give you the best of both worlds.

just so ya know the magnifier doesnt increase the size of the dot to 3 moa . It magnifys the whole image so the target stays in perspective to the dot. O. P. A good option for you would be the leupod 1.25 x 4 mark ar mod i with the fire dot reticle . its in your budget and fits your needs .

My first ar I installed an eotech 512 and am very happy w/ it to 100 yds. My wife's AR I had a cheap bushnell banner 1-4 scope on something else that I moved to her AR. She seems to like the scope so I upgraded to the leupold MkAr 1-4 w/o the illuminated dot. She is happy and it does work pretty well for me too. BUT, I just don't like the way a scope requires very close to correct eye position. The eotech doesn't care where my eye is as long as I can see the dot. I have realized, since I also have astigmatism, that there are two types of red dots. I can see the eotech reticle absolutely perfectly. The dot in my Hakko panoramic that I have on a pistol looks a bit like a star to me. So I use the smallest dot on minimum brightness and it is ok but nothing like the eotech. I recently got one of the Primary arms 3x magnifiers on a flip mount to put behind the eotech 512 on my dpms 308 AR. haven't even been able to sight it in yet due to weather but, looking at things at various distances out the garage window,  this seems to be a very nice combination that gets near the precision of the 1-4 scope w/ a dot sight. One thing though, the magnifier makes eye position more critical much like the 1-4 scope. I think it is a good combination. I figure that in a situation, I can use the eotech and it will be quick to acquire and work great. IF, there is ever a situation that I need the magnifier, by definition, I think I will have the little extra time needed to get my eye position correct. BTW, I chose the eotech for the 1MOA dot size. that is a major consideration at 100 yds. When I was looking at dots for the 308, I was considering the least expensive Aimpoint but the larger (2 or 3 MOA? I forget) just put me off. Also I really like the 65MOA circle. On my pistol, with only a single dot, people who try it for the first time always have trouble finding the dot in the glass. No one has trouble finding the eotech dot.
