Hi Guys:

I've never "built" any AR before.  I have a few questions.  I'd like to replace the factory 20" HBAR on my Colt with something a little lighter and shorter.

The questions are primarily regarding gas tubes.  I've read some postings regarding barrel installation, but what about Gas tubes?

So where do I begin?  I assume I drift pins and remove the front sight, then remove the gas tube.  Is it simply a matter of pulling it out of the upper?  Is is simply a friction fit?  And after reinstalling a new barrel, do you simply press fit a new gas tube into the upper?

I simply dunno.

Have you RTFM?

You don't remove the FSB to remove the gas tube, not normally anyway. The tube is held into the FSB by a 1/16" roll pin. With it removed the gas tube can be pulled out of the FSB then bent slightly to the side and pulled forward out of the upper.

Your new barrel will quite possibly have the sight tower already on it.  but you do have to remove the gas tube to remove the barrel.  There is a roll pin thru the lower part of the sight assembly that secures the tube.  If you look at yours,  you will see it.  Once out you need to slide the tube out of the sight tower and into the upper.  There is a tool that makes this easier, but if you are careful not to collapse it, you should be able to work it out.  If you remove the front sight assembly, you will have to re-index it when you re-install it and thats another subject.  Your new barrel should have a sight tower already on it but may not always be the case.

I would first consider how much you are willing to pay for "shorter and lighter".  Then take that amound and figure if you could purchase/trade for the desired upper complete.  If your Colt is a complete rifle from the factory then you should seriously consider just purchasing a complete upper.  This way you could still retain any warrantee should you ever have any problems.  But that's just my opinion
