Hey kids! So I just bought my first AR. Been wanting one since I got out of the Infantry back in 94 but finally had the opportunity to get one. I don't have a lot to spend, but Im looking for a decent sight to put on it. Not sure if its possible, but I'm looking to stay at or under $100. So if you guys could point me in the right direction for my price range I would appreciate it.
Also, I have a hard front sight. Do I sight the optic in with the front hard sight or no? Sorry if thats a stupid question, but my M16 in the Army I just had hard sights. No optics lol. Thanks or helping out a Vet and a newby excited AR guy. |

I picked this up at BP on sale for $150. Keep your eyes open.

Id sight in the back up sights on their own, and shoot irons and save up four hundred dollars and then buy an Aimpoint Pro, Aimpoint M2, ML2, ML3. Buy once cry once, if you buy a 100 sight it will break or not hold zero. I only have the hard front sight and picatinny rail. I don't have a hard rear or flip up. Can I add a flip up to the Picatinny rail? |

Are you looking for a magnified optic or a red-dot?
Primary Arms is a great place to look for lower price point optics. |

But, if OP is looking to explore his options at the range, there are MANY non duty grade red dots that hold zero, perform well in that setting and are the $100-$200 range. Hundreds, if not thousands of satisfied users of them in this forum can attest to it. To get a taste of what red dots can do on an AR15 on a budget, consider the widely available Burris TRS-25 with riser available in just about every sporting goods store in America for about $100, or any comparably priced red dot from Primary Arms. If life and limb are not in the equation, let OP poster try one of these. They are better than many realize, and adequate for range and non critical hobby use. The decent ones are not junk. I have about $800 invested in a duty grade red dot, riser and return to zero QD mount on my home defense weapon. I also have a Hi-rise TRS-25 on a range toy that has been quite abused and has never lost zero or malfunctioned over the course of three years. The same can be said about two Lucid M7 microdots, one of which has taken a pounding on a 12 gauge shotgun. While I do not place these budget optics in the category I would depend upon for life and death, none have failed under some pretty strenuous use. |

Hey MS556! I tried to PM you, but it said your box was full so I guess I'll just post it here.
Thanks for your reply to my post about a optic for my sight. Like I stated I am not foreign to the M16 with my Infantry background, but that was 22 years ago when I got out. But I am new to the AR which seems you can dress up like a barbie doll lol. I just bought my first AR that I have wanted for a really long time, and finally got around to it. Nothing to special or expensive as like you said, I just plan on taking it to the range and have fun enjoying shooting it. I have a hard front sight, but no rear sight. It has a picatinny rail on it. Like you said, I'm not looking to spend 3 grand on a sight. If I can find something in the $50-60 to $100 range that will do for me to enjoy shooting it, thats all I'm looking for. Is there just a flip up sight I can put on the Picatinny rail for now I can use with the front hard sight till I can get a sight? Or would I just be better off going to go get one of the ones you stated? Also,, will I need a riser when I get a rear scope so the front hard sight doesn't come into play? Or am I going to use the post on the front hard sight with the rear sight when I get one? I'm a big hand gun guy, so the AR thing is new to me with all the stuff that can go on with it. Not new to shooting it with my military background, but we only used the stock iron sights that it came with. Thanks for your help, and I appreciate your time in helping me out. You were the one who seemed to understand what I was looking for and wanting to do. If you have any other sights in my price range please send those along to me as well, or any other info you feel like passing along I need to know about he AR platform. Again, I appreciate your time. Also, would still like to hear opinions from others on this forum who are way more knowledgeable than I am with what I can or needs to be done with the AR I just got. Thanks, Sam |

Are you looking for a magnified optic or a red dot sight? If red dot, then you will need a riser to get it to cowitness with your iron sights. Primary Arms is an excellent place for budget red dots and risers/mounts.
If you are looking for a scope, most AR scope mounts will be high enough that the FSB is no longer visible once you're above 2.5-3x magnification. Magpul MBUS are great backup sights for the money if you want to add a rear sight that you can fold out of the way. Quoted:
Also, could someone please explain to me what a magnifier is and if I need one for just what I'm looking to do with my AR and that is just have fun shooting it and target shooting. A magnifier does just what the name says. It magnifies your target making it appear closer/bigger. I don't think you need one. It's easy to make solid hits out to 250 yards with just a red dot by itself. These are OOS right now, but I would recommend this red dot with any of the risers they have listed on the page. Primary Arms MD-RBGII. Great value for the money. You're a little late, I just sold one with the riser for $70 shipped

Like you said, I probably don't need a magnifier for what I'll be doing. So with a Red Dot I will NEED to cowitness it with the Front Iron Sight no matter what? And with a scope I won't because they should be high enough? And even if I mount a Red Dot or a Scope, I can still put a Flip up sight as a backup sight as well all on the Rail together?Just want to make sure I'm getting this right. Sorry, new to the AR stuff. |
