I planning my next build which will happen over the next few months.
I currently have 2  .556 rifles an  was thinking of building a lightweight 6.8 or 300 blackout.
If you had to pick one, which one would you go with?

I would dig around in the variant forum for a while and if I still didn't find some cool opinions I would ask a more pointed question with more information on what kind of shooting you enjoy doing and what use you would put the gun to.  Whether or not suppressors are an option is also a very big deal.

Depends on what you plan to use it for

After looking into the price of ammo I think ill go with another .556 or 9mm.

If you don't reload, 300BLK is hard to justify, with ammo being scarce.  The 6.8 is a bit more readily available, but still not as common as .223/5.56.  If you do reload, 300BLK is very economical to load.

both good choices. but I love my 308. cost is more, but worth it.

the only place ive been able to find 300 blk is at gunshows.. just saying you should bring your own K-Y jelly in before purchasing. I'd go with .308, it's easier to find, and better yet, it's easier to find at decent prices.

This.  If you plan on using a can then you'll want to go with the 300BLK.

neither . spend the money on reloading equipment and learn how to reload what you have then look to a variant caliber .

If you are allow SBR & suppressors, 300blk.  If not, 6.8.

There is a handful of states I refuse to move to but I would like to see wetre we are living in a year before going the SBR or suppressor route.

2 birds, one stone...

Come to Houston... we have the largest medical center on the planet so the wife is sure to get a job.

It's Texas so the laws, while they could be better still, are pretty loose compared to many communist NE states, and they improved with the last legislative session.  If memory serves PA isn't bad, but no sense going worse!

We also have had our worst winter in decades with a lowest low this season of 25 and nearly a season total of a 1/2 inch of frozen precip.  Been TOUGH this winter!  Then again weekend before last I was down on the beach in shorts and a tee, fished all last friday on the bay and limited out sooooo....

As to the OP, guns are tools.  Figure out the job the tool needs to do and make it do that job.  Suppressed/defensive or want to reuse your mags and bcg, I'd say the 300 BO unless you also have aspirations to build a piston rifle or hunt beyond 200 yds, then not so much.  6.8 if you intend to hunt with it beyond 200 yds or so.  Personally I inted to make my next upper a 6.5/.264 LBC.  The bullet weights are similar to the 6.8 but with a much better bullet coeffecient it carries more energy and stays supersonic longer than the 6.8 and even longer than the .308, but in the standard AR platform, and shoots flatter than any of them.  Hard to find ammo though it's getting better daily, and I reload so I can deal with the lower availability.
