Hi All,
I would like some input here. I am wanting to assemble another AR 15 type rifle. I had decided to go with 6.5 grendel. Now it seems every time I turn around, every gun magazine is touting the virtues of a .308/ 7.62 X 51. I have had a Springfield M1A since 1996. Bought it new, lots of mags etc. I also have a DSA FAL that I have had for several years. Both of these rifles are good shooters. The M1A is very accurate. Has a Smith enterprises Scope mount & Shepperd scope that I got a deal on. It is heavy, but reliable. My question, is it even worth it to me to build up a .308 AR? Thanks, Mark PS: If I posted this in the wrong place, mods, please move it. |

The AR system lends itself to accuracy since it is a straight line from the muzzle to the buffer tube.
If you want a combat rifle, you have two great options already in your collection and I don't think the AR in .308 offers a leg up on the FAL or M1A. However, if you want something for precision shooting with ample factory loads available, the 308 AR with a good barrel & glass will likely surprise you (.260 is another option utilizing 6.5 bullets). Additionally, there are some lighter weight hunting setups available now too, but the 6.5 Grendel will handle most medium game well. The main advantage of the AR is configurability, so get the setup that works best for your purpose(s). The Variants section is the proper place, so a mod will likely move accordingly. |

What are the requirements you are seeking? (i.e., the amount of ammo one can carry per lbs., stopping power in foot lbs., effective range, cost per round, etc.)
With the next build I have recently started amassing the various pieces for. First I was thinking 6.5 Grendel, then 6.8 SPC II, then back to 6.5 Grendel, then a dedicated Mk. 262 5.56, but recently I have been paying attention at wildcat rounds. Specifically, 6.5 PCC. The paper below has some good information to help with your decision. Increasing Small Arms Lethality in Afghanistan: Taking Back the Infantry Half-Kilometer |

Thanks for the info. My deal is I am addicted to building up AR's. I was just looking for something different. The M1A is more accurate than me, and the FAL, I just thought was a cool, dependable gun. Both are heavy though, compared to an AR. Since I have gobs of mags for both rifles, I think I will forgo the .308 AR, and look at some of the other possibilities. I just don't need another 5.56 X45.
Thank You, Mark |

6.5 Grendel ruined .308 for me. I've owned 5 different AR10's, and I doubt I'll ever buy another again chambered in 7.62 NATO or .308 Win. unless it is a collector's item/Duch Armalite AR10 from the 1950's/1960's.
The only AR10 calibers I mess with are .260 Remington now, and I have one custom GAP .260 Remington AR10 they built for me for my long, heavy gun. 6.5 Grendel fills the rest of my target shooting and hunting needs. I also have a boat load of 5.56 or .223 Wylde carbines. |
