As far as night vision goes I am a real novice, I have some questions: 1. What is this Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3 mean? 2. If I was using a headset model, would my red dot sight show up, or be useless? 3. What other types of sights can be used with Night Vision? 4. Is a head set better or a fixed sight better? 5. Where are some of the best deals? |

common questions you have. 1)gen # refers to the advancements in technology. 1 is oldest 3 is newest see link; http://www.nightvis.com/site/faq/default.asp#faq3 2)yes and no. yes your NV will pick up the dot but you will not be able to effectively use the dot sight. 3)PVS14 types can be used with a dot type sight when they are weapons mounted. 4)depends and how you want to hunt. both have advantages and draw backs. under 100 yards a head mount and laser are probably the hotest thing going. past that a deticated scope would excell. 5)the best deal is the one that gets you what you want and works. alot of good deals are on surplus units that have an unknow past. |

1. Gen 1 works only with IR light source and is grainy. Gen 2 works with ambiant light. Gen 3 works with ambiant light but in lower light levels with greater clarity and the tube lasts twice as long. 2. Your red dot would be visable but if not NV compatable it would "bloom" or be a giant glowing dot making it unusable. 3. IR laser with PVS14 or PVS7 also pistol iron sights and others but only if your PVS14 is weapon mounted. (they make quick detatch mounts for helmet/weapon) 4. Head mounted for moving and close range and weapon mounted for stationary and long range. Dont use NV indoors in CQB scenarios use white light instead its faster. 5. PVS7B is the best deal on a new NV headset and a regular 6015 is the best deal on a Gen3 monocular. (It lacks adjustable gain) Get at least Gen 2 or you will be disapointed and if you get Gen 3 it will last twice as long so you get more bang for the buck in the long run. Buy NEW not used as you have no idea if the tube is going to last another 4000 hours or 40 hours. |
