Hi guys. I'm putting together a new build and the MEGA 14.5" midlength barrel has piqued my interest. What's interesting is they use stainless blanks and finish it with a nitriding process.
As far as I understand, stainless barrels are easier to cut, and therefore have better potential for accuracy, but at the cost of longevity compared to 4150 barrels. I assume the nitriding process makes the stainless barrels more wear resistant. Does anybody have experience or data with MEGA barrels, and/or the longevity and durability of nitrided stainless barrels? |

You are correct that nitrating SS barrels make them more wear resistant (actually will make any barrel more wear resistant).
No experience with MEGA barrels, but I have a 18" stainless 1:8 5R Melonited barrel with a 223 Wylde chamber . It only has approx 1.5k rounds through it, but it still shoots as accurate as the first round. I also like that the finish is corrosion resistant. I have a full length hand guard and when I took it off after a full summer of shooting, the part of the barrel under the hand guard still looked as good as the day I put it on. Of course YMMV, but I have nothing but good things to say with the process ... |
