I bought my first AR (S&W Sport, slab side) about 4 months ago and the BRD hit really hard! What a fine weapon! I have never had any gun that is so much fun and relatively inexpensive to shoot. I quickly realized that the S&W is great for CQB and all around fun target shooting but it left me lacking in what I was thinking to use it for hog hunting. I was also thinking that the collapsible stock will allow my grand kids to shoot a high power rifle without the thump of a .308 or an '06 based cartridge. This feeling of inadequacy, for the lack of a better word, has prompted me to start my first custom build dedicated exclusively for long range hunting.
I bought an Aero Precision lower receiver, an A2 fixed FDE stock, a Hogue FDE grip, an ALG ACT FCG and a lower parts kit. After chasing the pivot pin spring down a couple of times, I finally got it all together. I bought a Green Mountain 20" 1:7 barrel and will use a thread protector on the end. It is a hunting weapon and I am counting on proper shot placement to not need a quick follow up shot. I just ordered an Aero Precision complete upper, a NiB 9310 BCG and a Bravo type 3 large release CH. I picked up a gas block at the gun show yesterday and I still have to track a rifle length gas tube down locally to finish the barrel assembly. Slide a GunTec keymod free float 15" hand guard over it and its ready to shoot. Well I will have to get the optic I want which is an Osprey Global 3X9X40 MD, one of the longest eye relief scopes I have ever seen. An amazing optic for the $219 price tag. I see this "hobby" becoming more and more consuming and that fact does not bother me a bit! I just bought my second 1K rd. box of shells and shooting them up is a blast. This disease has no cure and I am good with treating it with several hundred rounds at a time! Thank this great community for all the information to support my addiction!! |
