| Hey guys, new here and kinda new to AR's just got a quick question for you all. I'm building an AR and was wondering if anyone has any experience with non-free float handguards like the ergo keymod rail and the Troy battle rail. I was thinking of putting a rail on but I don't have any of the tools, experience, or resources to put on a $275 KMR. I also like the A2 front sight and didn't really want to remove it. Any honest tips or experience would be helpful. |
| I had a Damage industry Ridged Quad Rail on my carbine for 2 years, it's for sale in EE. I replaced it with a Centurion Arms C4 FF rail. Had to cut the delta ring off and the hand guard cap for the C4 rail. Damage industry rail has a slime side to side profile, slimmer then the delta ring diameter. Locks on the barrel nut for a solid mount. |

I have had my hands on the m5 rail from knights, and recently the MI key mod drop in while shopping around for my sporter HBAR. I had my hands on a few no-names too, they were all just fine. Personally id love to get my hands on an ergo rail.
I'd also like to mention two things. First, the tools to remove the fsp and delta ring are really pretty inexpensive and handy to have. I think my multi function AR wrench was around 20 bucks. Just food for thought, it's not as bad as some people think. The other thing is free float vs drop in accuracy. I don't doubt for a second that a free float rail is more accurate in regards to barrel influence from handling. With that said after reading the blog on looserounds where Shawn shot 7/10 at 1000 yards with a pretty-much-stock A2 and mk262, I'm confident that in either configuration the rifle will be miles more accurate than I am. Ugh, I'm rambling. Of the ones I have handled, the one I'm tempted to pick up is the MI keymod. It felt awesome, as does most everything from MI that ive handled. |

Drop-In non free floats work just fine, ask our military I'd personally scan the EE for a used KAC RAS, super easy to install and you get that "warm fuzzy clone feeling" I've handled a rifle with the MI drop in quad and it locked up nice and tight and felt like a nice piece as well. Also, if you don't have any tools or experience, should you maybe buy a factory gun versus building your AR? |

I really like the MI G2 drop in. Nice, solid, well made little rail plus it was pretty inexpensive. I kept my Noveske simple. (Picture came out kinda crappy for some reason.) http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c26/jtskier11/20151020_164028_Night.jpg Cover all the rails! |

I got bored last weekend and wanted to see if I could mod some XTM panels to fit the entire side rails. I was able to get them on over the swivel holes. Kinda like the weight loss without the light. |

Also, if you don't have any tools or experience, should you maybe buy a factory gun versus building your AR? I guess I should clarify. I have shot many AR's (my good friend was a marine sniper and owns a few) but never had the money (college student) to buy my own. I just don't have any experience doing work on AR's. Also, I guess technically its not a build, I bought BCM upper pretty much complete and planned on either buying a complete blem PSA lower and putting an ALG trigger in it or buying a PSA enhanced lower already built. So basically I will just be slapping an upper on a lower and adding a few things. |

I have used the Knights Armament factory seconds rail with good luck. No play or wobble in the rail under even close to normal use. Installation is simple and take about 3 minutes. Mine came w/ 4 rail covers as well.
If it's good enough for the United States Marine Corps, it's good enough for you. |
