This question is coming from two fronts- one being I have a RRA Operator II which needs to be modified and the second is that I'm considering building my first AR.

Anyway- what are my options for barrels which aren't threaded for a muzzle device (NYS requirements)?  I am not looking for a super heavy barrels, rather a 16" length standard barrel.  I wouldn't mind a varmint type barrel (rock river) but even that would be on the heavier side.

I've looked around, and 90% of the options our there are threaded.

Thoughts?

Well I'm assuming that is the universal way to tell me to cut and crown a threaded barrel.  Won't work with my current barrel as it will be too short and there no point in going through that effort if I'm buying new anyway.

14.7 or 14.5 with a pinned muzzle device is NFA legal.

Not in New York?

Barrel length has to be 16"- including or excluding a break it doesn't matter.

So since we can't have breaks in NY, the barrel itself must be 16" min.  My current barrel is about 16" with the break, so yes removing it would make it too short.

I don't want to get into the word of the new NYS law (what a headache), just looking for barrel options.

Could spend the extra money to get a 18" barrel then spend more money to get it cut and re-crowned. Don't you just love NY.

Or could you get some extended thread protector (muzzle device with no ports) pinned on?

You might have some luck in the New York HTF from people who have faced the same issue.

pin and weld a thread protector over the existing threads.

Don't you just want one of the new post-ban barrels that come in all lengths of 16 and more and various profiles, but have a regular civilian muzzle crown?

They are out there, just have to search a bit.  Cheapest route would be to get a regular 18 inch barrel and have it cut down and crowned.  Any competent gunsmith should be able to do that for not much.

Sorry for your misery in living in NYS.  The better solution is do what Remington firearms has done:  Move out of state.

You can look for someone looking to sell a Post-Ban Upper Assembly or Post-Ban barrel that they have taken off to their own gun that was in Post-Ban configuration. Any of the online gun sales or auction sites should have some advertised.

Or, Windham Weaponry shows 16" M4 compliant barrel and upper assemblies (not threaded with crowned muzzles) for sale with the standard FSB installed.  They also show a compliant muzzle device for threaded barrels for sale (I don't know if it needs to be pinned).

Stag makes one. I'm not crazy about 1/9, 4140 or the M4 profile but it should be a fairly decent barrel. Personally I would find a 18" mid-length and have it cut and crowned at 16.25".

^^^^ This should be what OP is looking for based on his original post requesting a "standard" barrel. I think his existing rifle has an M4 profile 16" carbine chrome lined barrel with 1:9 twist, just like the one posted above.  It should be good to go and the least expensive option for a crowned muzzle barrel to be Nanny York Commie compliant.

On the existing RRA rifle why not send the barrel out and have the threads turned off then refinished. Adco could do that really easily.
