Howdy: since I'm new to posting pics as well, give me the link on how-to, and they'll be forthcoming...[adding a URL per the "add image" button doesn't make sense to me: pics are on the harddrive!] American Spirit Arms with a Wilson SS 1:8 HBAR, YHM lightweight 4 rail, flip front and rear BUIS. If you don't really want pics at this point, I understand, since I know ASA's reputation here (although I wish I knew when I bought!) but read on... Scary Phantom FH, CAA saddle, rubber stock pad--does it get uglier?--TDI folding foregrip (just say no!), bipod mount which will be on EE as soon as I figure out how to do that, or trade for a normal front sling swivel. Likewise with the DPMS Mangonel flip rear sight. Don't need flipping, so I'll buy/trade for a YHM fixed or similar. Front is ASA and serviceable, for now. Stowaway 2 grip will be swapped for a Tango Down I bought weeks ago...there's thinking ahead! Now if I'd just bought plenty of ammo, too. Although I'd planned for months on my perfect build, this one jumped at me for $750, so I figure it saves me a few hundred clams, and I can enjoy shooting an AR as I get together my second. No misconceptions here: I get the whole disease thing, and I've caught it. More ARs to follow. Maybe even switch the rail to a new M4 (would be ADS at this time), although I'm actually vacillating between a 16" middy and a lightweight 20" CMMG, so there you go. Also, leaving the rail on may help make the sale, if I do let it go someday (?) Range test. I'm no bench shooter, so I was happy with 1.5 inches each at 25 and 50 yards. What do they say, "Minute of Bad Guy?" Ouch on ammo prices; all I could get was Remington 55 gr. at Walmart for $6.50/20, and I shot around 40 rounds. No malfs, so I'm happy. That's with garage sale 20 round mags, since my Pmags haven't arrived, yet. Wish I knew more about the previous 1000 rounds, but so far so good. Wasn't really dirty: 8 patches (1 MPro7, 3 dry, repeat), and a good wipe down of the rest. Inspection of BCG per the "how-to tell how used your AR-15 is" thread makes me feel confident it's under a 1000. A few drops of oil here and there, per ADCO instructions, and voila. I also employed the silicon gas-buster trick and it worked like a charm! I only shot one other AR, and this was a much more pleasant experience in that respect...HBAR may have helped, too. In summary? Functional bird-in-the-hand. Makes me smile. Hope it performs with a few hundred rounds at our next tactical shoot. |

Run through tactical shoot: about 125 rounds in 5-6 stages, doubletaps should be cake with HBAR. If it has zero malfs, keep it; otherwise, sell it and step up plans for AR #2. If keep... Get that TD BG on it. Figure out whether I should get ladders or covers to protect the sharp rails (and ungloved hands). Switch Mangonel rear with Larue fixed, or maybe save $45 with a YHM solid. That thing sticks up rather strangely compared to the A2 model, tho, so might as well man up for Larue. Get a real front sling swivel and store/sell/trade the bipod mount. Get a real sling instead of my WECSOG. Of course each of those items should be independent of the sale decision, since I'd keep them for the next one (except the rail protection). Honestly, the superficially tacticool handguards sold me, and the 1:8 twist (since I'm heading toward a 1:7 and thought this would be a good back-up gun considering heavier rounds)...thinking it wouldn't be hard to resell if necessary, at least to part-out. What's the subconscious motivation for buying this unknown brand, after spending so long to plan my ideal build? I think it was a readily manageable price to experiment with the platform...and now I'm sold on the platform and eager to get either a 16 middy lightweight (or maybe a 20 if I keep #1) from CMMG and a lower with a CTR. I am interested in advice on the brand itself, if I really should bail now. I recall the image of Tom Hanks running away... What's up? Am I dealing with MIM? Is it because the company can't hang? I really don't want to keep it if it's a long term liability. Thanks. |
