Well...I've been bit by the bug. Shot some friends' black rifles and I'm hooked. Upon receiving the advice of a few, I'm leaning toward building my own ground up so that 1) I have a gun designed for my purposes and 2) I will learn a lot in the process.
Now here is the thing...I have no idea where to start...so I turn to you all for some direction. My intended uses...well the majority of use will be just targets, plinking probably between 100-300 yards. HOWEVER, I would like to build something that I can use to hunt with also. My gut would like to use it for everything from hog up to something as big as an elk/bighorn...which I'm not sure is possible or efficient.(hence this thread). Where do you guys suggest I go to read up, study, learn about this process? I'd like to start buying pieces now..maybe have a complete rifle in 4-5 months. ANY ADVICE WELCOME! Thanks! |

dunno about in your state but in VA you cannot legally hunt deer with anything smaller than .23 caliber, so ar is out of the question.
You could look into the PredatAR in .308 or also any ar10, or an AR in 6.8 caliber.. just look around on the site, this question has def been asked before, check it out |

I would start with a stripped lower and the lower parts kit. Those two items will be needed and are not different regardless of plinking or hunting. That should get you going so you have something to build and feel like you are making progress until others come by with there suggestions.
Since I am not a hunter and don't know what a hunter needs in/on a rifle, I can not help any further. my suggestions would be for a plinker rifle only. |

Yea your asking for 2 different types of rifles that sadly you cant do in one....
Even if Tx doesnt have laws against using .223 on larger game....you'd have a hell of a time bringing down something big with this round. The next problem is if you build something for a larger caliber....you wouldn't want to be plinking with that expensive ammo. Some calibers can be used in the same lower, so if you chose one of these than you can build 2 uppers and have 1 lower and just swap between them depending on what your doing. |

You can use .223/5.56 for deer in Texas. And it is a decent choice if you do your part with shot placement. However, it doesn't offer as much margin of error as say a 30-06. A .223/5.56 is NOT an elk cartridge, nor do I believe it is legal where you can hunt elk near Texas, to wit, Colorado, where I believe 6mm (.243) is the minimum allowed for hunting elk. If you are going to build an AR-platform rifle yourself, step 1 is to buy a lower receiver. I would posit that most are alike in quality, unless you are talking really high-end stuff. Palmetto State Armory, Spikes, YHM, etc. All good. You need the lower first, because that's the only part that requires you to go to a dealer and buy it (or transfer it if ordered from out of state). Everything else can be purchased from your computer at home and shipped to your door.

Is there a caliber that I could plink with but also hunt boar/deer/buck with? 308 not enough for buck? 308AR requires the large frame AR such as the AR10. It's a more expensive platform and it's definitely not in the "plinker" class. 308 is plenty big for a buck. So if you want something for deer and want the small frame AR and still want to plink there is a good choice. It's called 6.5 Grendel. You can kill a deer with 5.56 but it sounds like you want a heavier round. The other choice is 6.8SPC but if you don't handload, 6.8 is more expensive to shoot than Grendel. |
