Thanks to the forum for the information/suggestions/guidance in helping me make my decision to keep my SP1.
My SP1 is now cleaned in and out.  I watched lots of vids and learned all about how this rifle works.
I replaced the old bastard trigger pin (many thanks to Bear_Flare for the pins and directions).
Another member Booze supplied me with a period sling.  What a great forum huh?

Now I'm off to shoot it gently, clean it, and keep it for a long time.

Man - that rifle looks good! bet it shoots as good as it looks! Now use the parts you removed and build a tac-a-cool carbine (that is allowed - just not talked about)

I KNEW we could talk you into it! Seriously, you made the right decision, and you will really grow to dig it - especially when people start paying attention to it at the range after you beat their score with their tacticool carbine. (FWIW, many of us actually DO own newer gear, but these old rifles really know how to talk.) It constantly amazes me how cool people are here. I would have given away more stuff over the last several years, but usually someone beats me to it. Glad you got what you needed - now go shoot it and let us know how you like it. Your next purchase BTW should be some period LBE, and an M1 helmet with a Mitchell cover. Full Metal Jacket or Platoon will never be the same. Just keep the real smoke grenades separated from the repros and you'll be fine.

You won't regret your decision.  As stated most here have more modern gear but we support retroland for many reasons.  Basically a great bunch of people and retro rifles are great shooters / collectibles.  Enjoy your rifle and keep it nice.  A little electrical tape on port door pad and along the side will keep it from scratching and dinging from brass / shooting over time.  A lot of this stuff actually cost more to ship today than it cost to buy a few years back so it's not a financial bind in many instances to give a few pieces away and those building usually greatly appreciate the gesture.  I've been given so many guns over the years that I would never have been able to purchase otherwise.  What goes around comes around.  Never know when you cut the elderly or handicapped neighbors grass for free what may happen.  A lot of those guys were vets and also have many great stories to tell.  Not up to date on bible lore but I believe there was the good samaritan.

Yup...sounds like the retro guys.

Hope you enjoy that sweet ride, and let us know how you do with it.

One more thing. You should keep your eye out for an SP1 carbine upper (complete) they come up periodically on the EE - and try  it on that lower. Increases your flexibility, and IMO you will LOVE the fixed stock carbine thing.

That rifle looks great and I think you will really come to love it!

I learned on a 603 in basic and when I started buying ARs I started with all the "cool tactical" stuff and I still have those but have swung towards the retro stuff. There is something about the simplicity and light weight of retros that is just right.

The prblem now is my eyes aren't the same as they were in 1989 so they don't like the A1 sights as much as they used to but I can still hit with them pretty decent.

You know damn well that if he buys another upper, RBRD dictates that he will build another lower

Good job getting her back in shape, MBFD!  That's a real nice-looking rifle you got there.
Now let us know how she shoots!

Hey, that rifle cleaned up real nice. But, it was pretty sweet to start with.

You will see members helping one another out here all the time. I know it is one of those things that always adds to my day.

Very glad to see you decided to keep it, & that you got the hammer pin replaced. Looks great!

FWIW though, to be correct the sling should be black in that same style.

Actually the black SP1 sling is stitched like a 601 sling, not same-same as the M1 style sling. I believe it's a different length than the 601 sling though, and of course, it's black.

So it should it be a silent sling for the SP1, except for the very early ones?

You know, I don't know what the later SP1'sused, butI'm sure someone else does. Not sure if they ever came with silent slings. The earlier SP1 slings were stitched and had no buckle - they look just like a 601 sling (no pics, sorry) but they are black. Like I said, I think they were a diferent length also. I'd like to find a 1" silent sling for a .22 I have an Uzi sling on currently.

Have a 1978 vintage SP1, it came with the black silent sling (cotton, not nylon).

Thanks for all your replys.

Interesting to note that a few of you also have "uber" ARs.
When I go over to uber land for my new 6940 it's nothing like being here.  I think they may be a younger crowd.

My uber AR is a Son-Tay raid GAU-5. It's high speed due to the singlepoint optic mounted on top.

Suuuu-weeeeeeet! I remember my first SP1, I got it in used in 1980 or thereabouts for $225, used. Personally, I like the E1s and A1s, but my first was just like that. I wish I still had the carbine I bought new about a year later.

uxb,
you ever think about getting into the old "retro" stuff?
...maybe build an SBR 607?...

Sorry to hear that I got the wrong sling.
So it should be silent sling black cotton for 1982?

I got 2 black slings today for a whopping $3, they don't have the metal clips so you'll have to use the ones from the green one. Please resend me your address.

What a beauty.

I'm taking a big step here - I think your sling is on backwards.  But I am no way an expert.

Backwards for a rifle, correct for a carbine.

Speaking of living and learning - how do I copy what you said, like you did with my FNG comment?

Buckle makes too much noise against the handguards.

You are very welcome.  I am glad that another SP1 could be brought back from dormancy and made whole again.  Enjoy that rifle, they don't make'em like that anymore... well, unless you're Nodak Spud

Thanks Booze - I got the slings.
Yes not one but two slings.  One has the buckles.

Had this draped about the wife, but when she heard I was going to post it she got shy.

Now I'm sure there is the correct way this should look.  Where should I posn the buckles?

One buckle is black, one is worn metal - paint them both black or remove the paint from the black one?
Note that one is 48" and one is 52".  I seem to remember that sniper1 on the website http://www.retroblackrifle.com/ said that the SP1 had 48" slings.  yay / neigh?  Doesn't matter?
