I have a Bushmaster Lower mated with a BCM Upper. I went ahead and bought the BCM auto BCG for this upper. My Bushmaster contains the standard LPK provided by Bushmaster, so I am unsure as to the original manufacturer of it. However, the hammer is notched.
I have heard a little about a notched hammer not allowing the auto BCG to live up to its full potential. I know BCM is coming out with their own line of lowers and I've been made aware that they do not have a notched hammer. Please note, this is not a question about converting this to FA. I'm simply wondering if having a notched hammer is detrimental to my build and if it's worthwhile for me to go ahead and change out these parts. Would someone far wiser that I please explain the notched hammer vs. non-notched hammer to me? |

A notched hammer is intended to catch on the firing pin of a carrier without a firing pin shroud. So... With a shrouded carrier, the notched hammer does nothing. It causes no problems, it performs no function. I would definitely prefer a rounded hammer, primarily because they're supposed to run better with a .22LR conversion. But, also because that's closer to the "real thing" that we all strive to a achieve. A notched hammer will work fine for 5.56mm operation. |

The notched hammer will also be an issue if you ever buy a 9mm upper. I simply replaced my Bushmaster hammer with a DPMS hammer and I was able to use it with my 9mm bolt. Other then the 9mm and possibly the 22lr kit issue, I am not aware of any other issues or reason to swap and frankly a self jamming gun if you have a disconect fail might just be a good thing to keep you out of legal trouble |
