Some makers (Colt etc) notch the top front surface of the hammer. Some/most don't. Was this something that was necessary when older style bolt carriers left about 1/3 of the firing pin area open at the rear? And is no longer necessary with the current style of covered firing pin carriers? Or something else? It seems most (maybe all?)LPK's do not have notched hammers.
Was it ever necessary--either in full auto mode or semi? If so, is it still a good idea, or totally unnecessary, regardless of the bolt carrier design? |

Just part of the sp1 design to try to stop hammer follow. It was needed along with the smaller collar on the firing pin unless you wanted the firing pin to get bumped around by the other style hammer when the sp1 notched carrier returned. One company I remember sold sp1 style carriers and round top hammers and it seemed to work but I don't see how it did not punish the firing pin and retaining pin when cycling.
The notch in the hammer does not really hurt or help anything I know of on a carrier with a shrouded firing pin unless you might want if for the lighter weight. |
