Run run far away and forget their name. My dad just got a 9mm upper and 4 mags that are the same size as regular magwells. They used to do a glock lower and a sten lower. The mags are so tight they have to be pulled out. They won't even go in other lowers and they drop from other lowers and will not stay. He bought some parts and some of them were out of spec and will not work. Just do yourself a favor and buy somewhere else. You will save yourself a headache. MY dad on the other hand is a glutton for punishment and loves oly.

I bought my first Oly 16" upper 7 or 8
years ago. I run Sten mags with a set of mag blocks, of my own design. I can't remember one failure of any kind with that upper. It's what I shoot at my local, non-sanctioned 3 gun match. I liked so well, I just finished building a 7" upper for my pistol lower. Of the 400 or so rounds of reloads, through it, again, no failures. My Oly's run great. Flame away. John |

When I originally wanted a pistol caliber AR, I bought a factory Colt 9mm. I'm not exaggerating at all when I saw I was surprised when I made it through a full magazine without a malfunction. It was the most unreliable POS I've ever owned. Thinking it may have been a lemon, I picked up another Colt. Same problems with both factory Colt and converted Uzi mags. I'll never own another Colt or Colt-style pistol caliber AR again. I'm a Colt snob when it comes to .223, but not 9mm.
I swore off pistol caliber AR's until I shot my friend's Olympic .45acp. It fed everything reliably. I immediately started looking for a used one and picked it up with three converted Uzi mags. I liked it a lot, but the mags were only 10 rounds. I got in on the first run of CNC Gunsmithing's AR45/Khalan Manufacturing AR45 lowers. I use unmodified M3 Greasegun mags and couldn't be happier. I've tried everything in it from cast bullets ranging from 165gr SWC, 185gr SWC, 200gr SWC, 225gr TC, 225gr LRN and 230gr LRN. Jacketed from 185gr JHP, 200gr JHP and 230gr JHP and Ball. It feeds EVERYTHING reliably. The only time I had feeding problems was when I found some loading data and tried to use some of my CAS 250gr .45LC LRNFP bullets. It didn't like them, but then again, neither did any .45acp handgun I tried them in, except for a S&W 4506. So, wanting a 9mm AR again, I found a used Olympic 9mm upper. Again, same experience. I have some converted STEN mags which may be a bitch to load, but they run 100% with all ammo. In that upper, I've tried NATO ball, JHP's ranging from 124-147gr, and cast bullet reloads in 127 and 147gr. I run mostly cast bullet reloads and have never experienced a malfunction in this upper with any ammo. I don't have an M16 lower, but several of my friends do. They've used the Colt 9mm uppers and had reliability problems with them. One bought the same Olympic uppers I have, except he shortened the barrels for use on his M16, and they run, all the time, with no misfeeds (and he abuses the hell out of his MG's, too). I'd recommend Olympic pistol caliber AR's to anyone. I can't say much for their .223's since I've only shot one, but their pistol caliber AR's certainly get my endorsement. |

Maybe a few people may have a problem with their Olympic Arms rifles. I had a pivot pin that was over sized. But discussed with their armorer and found out that different manufacturers pick the bottom, middle, or upper end of the mil-spec standards and that is many times why some parts do not easily fit. They fixed it quickly and I was happy.
I've had an issue or two with almost ever one of my gun manufacturers - Bushmaster with defective A2 sight assembly, Kel Tec pistol with too thick hard chroming, Glock police refurb sold with shot out barrel, Smith & Wesson revolver cylinder not smoothly rotating, and I can go on and on. I've talked to customer service at almost every gun makers and heard hundreds of stories of unfortunately a lot of stupid customer and some self admitted quality problems of their own. Oly had some issues about 15 years ago (at least according to the folks on the Net). But their quality appears to have gone up and their prices have been great. Call them and try to work it out, they will treat you right. For every one guy that says my friend's Oly don't run right, there are usually a dozen of us with Olys running fine. Lots of soldiers in the PNW with Olympic Arms rifles. My 9mm Oly rifle runs like a raped ape. The Oly 10mm carbine is a really thumper. My Oly 45 ACP pistol should be a really fun shooter too. I also have a Bushy and a DPMS. Like AR-15s period. Remember, Olympic Arms is the largest AR-15 manufacturer west of the Mississippi River. Are they perfect? no. Do I support them? Yes. Because without them, the 2nd Amendment has a little less meaning. |

Shot a few hundred rounds like a champ. Now I've getting the barrel cut down and threaded to 7.5". Should be a blast as an AR-15 pistol. Like Oly - yes. Have three of them |

personally have a cncguns/khalan finished ar45 lower (first batch) and a oly upper - works excellent. fun gun to shoot. if i were to do it again, i would definiately go the cncguns lower, especially now that justin has his 07ffl and is going to be finishing them himself. after following the ar45 story for years, i am really happy that he doesn't have to rely on anybody anymore. as for the upper, can't complain about the oly upper, but the ronaldmwilliams upper sure is appealing, but unfortunately they weren't around when i got my oly upper. so imho, the setup would be justin/cncguns ar45 lower and either ronaldmwilliams or an oly upper. i would probably go the ronaldmwilliams upper because you are going to have less recoil, and can be basically custom made for you, i believe.

I've built 100s of .45 uppers using Oly parts and have never had an issue with any of their uppers or pistol specific parts. I've never even had an issue with a single Oly factory assembled .45 upper. Ignore the haters who probably never even owed an Oly product. They are just repeating internet BS.
Right now there are only two companies making complete .45 ARs. Oly blowback guns and Bazooka Bros, who uses Ron WIlliams DI uppers. |

A few years ago, I was in the market for a 9mm AR to SBR for a PDW-type project. I found a PreBan Oly 40cal on Gunbroker.com. I bought the Oly for commonality with my carry ammo.(PreBan status still matters here in CT). I traded a built up ban compliant AR for it straight up. It's easily my favorite gun. I heart Oly arms. |

This forum IS very anti Olympic Arms.
Well, I have to put my experiences. I was looking for an AR several years ago. I ended up custom ordering a Oly K16. That gun has performed flawlessly. It has shot thousands of rounds, accurate, reliable. I will admit that I now have a Colt (sits in the gun case, do not like shooting it), 9mm RRA, 6.8 RRA upper, a RRA .40 s&W upper on order. I find myself grabbing the oly first. I like the quality and fit of the gun. The only reason I did not go OLY for the 6.8, RRA price. I do not like Olys pistol caliber mags. If I was looking at another .223 or 5.56, I would gladlt look at Oly again. people would be very suprised whan they look at who actually makes parts for their favorite ar. Oly makes a lot for other companies that just slap their labels on the parts and vice versa. |
| This forum has no love for Oly...........I have used many of their barrels over the years.......and even had them rebarrel a Remington 700 for me about ten years ago........their barrels are great and I have two of them as we speak..........stainless ultra match.....and a 6x45.......no problems to report! |
|
I have an Oly 9mm that runs like a raped ape. No telling how many thousands of rounds of 9mm, factory and my own reloads with no problems at all.
It uses the Sten mags and I have had no problems what so ever. There is lots of Oly hate on this forum. I have never had a bit of problems. |
|
The only Oly product I have ever had is the 9mm upper I bought used a year and a half ago. It has worked flawlessly even with all the cheap ammo I shoot through it. Just took it out this morning and let my whole crew take turns shooting it. A couple of them are now wanting one.
It started out as an A2 upper. Just last month I changed it to a flat top with a Spot red dot on it. It has a Kurt's Kustom mag block and uses Sten mags. It is my favorite. I don't know if Oly can't or couldn't build rifles at one time. I just know I'm happy with what I have and would recommend the setup to anyone. In fact, I just bought one off the EE for my dad. |

When I started building ARs I went to Oly for parts because they were close by, only a 20min drive. I began to become aware of their QA deficiencies and eventually it was a pain in the ass. Quite a few things out of spec which caused me to make "adjustments" to make things fit. By adjustments I mean with a file or a dremmel tool. Gas tube holes off center, receivers machined off center, holes improperly drilled, mag wells way to tight, receivers so tight I had to remove material for them to mate properly, etc... Their reason was "We manufacture things to tight tolerances." I was like Their response to tight mag wells was "Throw away the mags, they're defective." Keep in mind this was a time when mags were considered made of gold (crime bill ban era) and the same mags fit fine in another brand.
The last straw was a set of receivers I had to bang the take down pins with a hammer to make them close. Fed up I refused to make any mods and decided to take them back for a refund. I had taken parts back before as this was becoming a problem. The guy at the counter was helpful but Tom Spithaler (however you spell it) sent the guy back out and had him tell me to write a report for why I wanted to return them. Between restraining myself from running to the back office to punch Tom in the face I insisted on a refund and got the hell out, NEVER to return. Over the next month I sold off ALL my Oly builds and invested the money in quality brand ARs. I've have never had a problem since. I wouldn't recommend Oly to anyone. Run, run away and dont look back. |

ANd how long ago was this? He wrote it was in the "Crime Bill Era", so it had to have been between 1994 and 2004. I heard about Oly problems back in the 90's, but nothing much lately. I used their parts roughly from 2001 to 2003. I built several different pistol and rifle caliber carbines. Funniest thing I'll never forget was their heavy barrel profile for pistol calibers. Had to pay extra for a normal profile. Damn 9mm carbine felt like it weighed 12bs. |
