| This isn't a retro thread but I'm going to ask you guys for help anyway because this is the only forum I know of where the smart alecs don't rule and the people are genuinely helpful. I bought a Japanese Type 99 Arisaka recently and I'm trying to find out any infornation about the fellow that owned it. I have tried to research it but I don't have a lot of information to start with so I can't get very far. The rifle is a Vet bring back from WWII and it has the Marines name carved in the buttstock and there is what appears to be a bullet strike on the top of the upper handguard. I think it is his nickname not his real first name(I could be wrong). Carved into the wood is: SGT. Bud Davis Iwo Jima 1945 and a pair of dice showing #7. That's all the info I have. I thought that since some of you fellows are still active military that you would have access to more information than I could get. I am not trying to get anyone in trouble for searching records they shouldn't search or anything, I am trying to find out just who SGT. Bud Davis was(or is)so I can understand better this great piece of history. The rifle came from an auction in Michigan so possibly that's where he was from. Mods if you want ot delete or move this post I understand. |

First, please share pics of this rifle if you can. As for researching the man, I forget the technical term for what they're called but there are various service member "lookup" services available online you might try using. Additionally, many units host sites online where they have old unit rosters and such posted. Some smart Googling might get you the info you're looking for.
Edit: Many of the photos on this site come from a collection of Roy (Bud) Davis from MI, apparently a vet: http://www.hartfordmichigan.com/hartfordhistory/military/Military%20Personnel/WW2/WWII%20%20M-S.htm Might be a place to start. |
| I did post the pics of the rifle on the C&R section and one fellow put up a link for the Military archives, but I can't find much info yet. Sometimes I can do a pretty good job searching but I'm striking out on this one. I found the link above the other day and the Bud Davis in Hartford was an Army Air Corp pilot. Thanks for the help! |
