I have shooting buddy (we shoot six times a year) who owns a ban era Bushmaster with a muzzle brake (visual appearance is AK-74): it's a good, accurate, reliable rifle, but is incredibly obnoxious on the range. I have suggested a Vortex or A2, but unless I initiate the process it won't happen. Are these darn things pinned, silver soldered, or welded? I have never given it close inspection (my error).
There were some very ignorant fellows without earpro who were literally dropped by it. I'm wearing good plugs plus electronic muffs, and I find it annoying. I appreciate your advice with this limited info; I'm trying to save the ears of tomorrow. |
| Yep they are welded, and if it's a 14.5 barrel, I'm not sure if a gunsmith could remove it and re-thread the barrel to where it would still be a legal 16" with another device. I'd hardly suggest it but I do recall reading about a guy who managed to bust the thing off with some sort of cheater bar or wrench, but he destroyed the finish on the barrel and probably warped or twisted it. Good luck, if you don't want to sell the rifle, just save for a new barrel. |

Easy there folks. It's not necessarily even pinned/welded/whatnot. Check it out before you go tell your friend he needs a new barrel.
Even if it is, there's ways to remove them without destroying anything but possibly the muzzle brake. Look at this thread, look at his weapon, then take care of it. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_4/407395_Perm_Attached_FH_with_1100_degree_silver_solder.html |
| There is a pin on top and a pin on bottom. I had the same Y brake on my XM15E2. You can file the brake where it goes over the threads and you will be able to see where the welds are. There is an instructional thread in the 'build it yourself' forum that shows you how to remove it. |
