I know there is nothing new under the sun and this has likely been discussed but how would this work?

Take a 4-6 power scope, like a US Otics or some other tube type scope (an ACOG body may be too big?) and have it mounted left or right of center like at 2:00 or 10:00. Use iron ghost ring sights or a narrow optical sight like a reflex (an EOTech may be too wide?) for CQB and rotate/snap/tilt the rifle to the left or right to use the scope for longer range shots.

Hell, if you primarily engage at long range reverse the setup with a scope on top and a CQB sight offset...

Dumb idea? Workable? Been done?

No offense.

It has been done, but just the opposite. (primary optic mounted @ 12 and irons or a Dr Optic mounted at 10 or 2)  3 gunners use it all the time, as it is a fast way of transitioning from long to PB.  I believe Zak_Smith has that on his 3 gun rifle.  TA11 at 12 and a DR at 2.

The 3 gunners do a similar thing (usually with the dot at the angle and magnified optic on top).

For playing games it works.  For 'real life' situtions there are better options:
1-4x illuminated reticle scopes (like the Short Dot or Accupoint), Aimpoint or EOTechs with flip away 3x magnifies, Scopes (like the Leupys or TAO1 Trijicons) with DR Optics mounted on them.

Who needs optics???  besides, precision is better obtained by lining your sights with the bore.  if your gonna use it for multi-role, mount an aimpoint at the 2 oclock position.  or get one of the multi role scopes that go from 4X magnification, to 1X magnification with just a touch of a button...

Here is a better "mouse trap".  Use a pivoting buttstcok !!!!
