Oh yeah, they get REAL hot. Even shooting relatively slowly if you empty several mags back to back (even 20's) you can damn near light a cigarette on the exposed barrel. We finished shooting at the bench one time and the rifle was standing on it's butt, I reached over and grabbed the forward part of the barrel a few minutes later to put it up and blistered my hand. It will easily give you a second-degree burn. I never rest a barrel on a sand bag though.
