Anyone build one of these? About to build my first AR and undecided on which kit.  Narrowed it down to the Oly or a J&T A2. The lower will be a cast Oly. Any suggestestions will be appreciated.

   Thanks...

I have no personal experience but have heard that the Oly kits are a bit loose and the finish is sometimes questionable. If you have the opportunity to take a look at the Oly components before purchase it would be a good idea.  What narrowed your focus down to these two choices?  If cost is a factor (when isn't it) there may be alternatives of similar price to the Oly.

Thanks for the info Woody.  I'm a newbie to the ARs and was going by what I read in the forums and yes, cost is a factor. Just finished a FAL and it got pretty deep in my pocket. As there is only $10 difference between the Oly and a J&T kit I will lean toward the J&T. I noticed that FAC has a decent price on the DPMS lower if this is a better unit. What would you suggest?

Thanks again,

I just put together a PCR kit from Oly and it's wonderful!  Fit and finish is perfect, so I don't know where you heard what you did.  For the price you just cannot beat it.

No doubt you are trying to be helpful and pass on the rumors that others have told you.

The PCR kits excellent quality and fit.  A person who buys one will be pleased with what you get.  Oly, dollar for dollar, is hard to beat.

There are other companies who are cheaper, but cheap is what you buy.

One of my coworkers bought a "kit gun" from OLY. It looked good. It performed good. And he paid $450 for it COMPLETE.

I would suggest a forged lower however. It will have a better value if you ever decide to sell. Also the finish on a cast receiver will look different than a forged recieiver. Since the upper receiver will be forged.............

I have a PCR-4 kit and my girlfriend's dad has one with the brake, dont get the brake, its friggen loud.  Since it doesnt have a chrome barrel, you gotta clean the chamber on occasion which my girlfriend's dad neglects to do, resulting in fail to extracts until I brush the chamber for him (I brush mine after every ~250 round range session and never have a problem).  Buy the forged lower, its worth the extra $20 and will match the forged upper much better than the cast one will.

Yes, cast lowers will blow up in your hands.  Send all your cast lowers to me for safe disposal.  Seriously, I would not worry about it.

The Oly kit will be just that, a kit.  You will have to assemble everything.  Parts are all of good quality.

The J&T will have the upper fully assembled, saving you time and money, especially if you do not already have tools.  J&T also have good quality parts.

Either way, you win.  Yes, I do own both J&T and Oly.  This is not "I heard it from my friend's cousin."

I put together an Olympic Arms kit and used a Rock River Arms stripped lower.  It was my first.  The Oly is a nice kit.

I'd look at a Rock River Arms lower; its forged rather than cast.  If the price difference is managable for you, it'll be the better investment.  J&T has wonderful customer service, as well.

Oly's kits have fully assembled uppers. It has all the innards for the lower that aren't assembeled, because the lower don't come with the kit.

Oly makes mostly forged lowers, they have 1 rifle made with cast receivers. They sell plenty of forged lowers.

Thanks for all the advice...Decided to go with a PCR-4 kit.. Oly forged receiver and GI mags..better get a 10 rounder to keep it politically correct when I go to the range.
Prices aren't bad:
PCR-4 kit..424 + ship
forged rcvr..90 + ship
mags..still looking
Checked my inventory and have  mucho brass, bullets and powder for 223. will load up a couple mags of each and see what it likes.
If it shoots as good as my FAL..I'll be a happy camper..
Too bad we can't hunt with a semi in this wonderful Commonwealth.
Thanks again.

as with everything in life, there are a few lemons. to generalize Oly as not very good quality is wrong. my stepson just put together one of thier PCR kits and that rifle looks, shoots, fits, excellent.

he is pleased with it, and i'm jealous of it....

Concur - hearsay helps few.  First hand knowledge is the best.

Glad you're picking up an Oly.  They are good ARs.

I've got a PCR-9 and man is the fit and finish nice.  Even has a feed ramp design that the 9mm Colts, RRA, and ASA uppers do not.

It's a quality gun.

Of the four brands of AR 15's I own, the Oly is the best. No, I am not brand loyal. Just the facts...
The factory muzzle brake is great! Loud is not a factor, cuz I wear ear plugs when ventilating beer cans.

VBDan..
Try  www.jtdistributing.com

Ordered the kit yesterday...Went to the shop last nite and found they had just made a trade for a  rifle that the owner sold the preban lower. So we ordered two forged receivers.

Sure glad I found this forum. It provides a lot of info for us newbies.

I just built a PCR4 kit from Oly Arms.  This was my first attempt at assembling.  It went great, and the rifle looks and shoots like a dream.  I built it on a forged Oly Arms lower.

I liked it so much that I just did another Oly Arms kit.  This is a 16" carbine (I don't know what Oly's name is) built on a forged Oly lower.

Fit and finish on both rifles is great.  I have $525 in each rifle.  That is for the kit and the lower.
