I know this is an AR forum but this is were optics questions are posted, so maybe ya'll can help me. So I am building a tactical style 10/22. I recently bought a BSA 30mm red dot and put on it. I like this optic and I have one that cowitnesses on my AR. The other day I took it to sight in and pretty much got it on minus the fact of cheap plinking ammo. My problem is I never got very good groups. Yesterday I was at the house aiming in the backyard at various objects...with it unloaded of course....and noticed that if I didn't maintain the exact cheek weld every time the red dot would be slightly off. If I gained cheek weld and the slightly moved my head it would move the dot a little off target which at longer distances means a larger MISS. I wanna stay with an inexpensive red dot but want something that is going to be consistant. It is almost nearly impossible to put your cheek in the same spot every time. What should I do?

A red dot sight is probably not the best optic for laying down tight groups. As far as the dot moving when you move your head, all red dot sights should do that as they are paralax free...meaning no matter where your eye is in relation to the dot, you just put the dot on the target and pull the trigger. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's how it works.

If you are looking to shoot groups than a a red dot isn't the best thing. I would look in to a variable power scope and you really don't have to spend a whole lot. You can get a good Taco or Center Pointe scope for around 75 bucks that will do the trick.

I may get some irons and put on it and use the dot as a co-witness.
