| I am new to this and as I get near the end of my first build it is time to consider optics. I have no clue as to brand or price . I would prefer something reliable inexpensive and compact. I have no desire to get the super sniper look or expense. I am building M4 flattop carbine . I have seen some pictures of rifles with what appears to be a single tube scope four to five inches long on a raised mount. Does anyone know the make model and cost of this type of scope. ,.............Thanks in advance for any help............Dan Daly |

IF you want proven reliable red dot optics the military trust their life with then the answer is Eotech/Aimpoint. If you want an inexpensive plinking optic that "some" civilians trust their life with then the answer is Bushnell/ Primary Arms. I got the Aimpoint btw and saving for an Eotech or Acog. |

I'll second, third, and fourth that if we are going by ownership. Someone will be along shortly to bring it up to 30+ Being in TX, I've got ACOGs on everything and or t1s. They just can't be beat. I do own some higher end stuff like S&B, but they don't get pulled out as often due to engagement range in Texas being around 10 feet. (Hogs). If you are looking for an honest to God scope, you get what you pay for. The best advice someone gave me here was to buy irons or a rds and ammo to practice with. I still bought the glass later, but the perceived need for glass or optics just about vanished for most of what I was using my guns for.

Yup when I 1st started I bought a cheap scope then realized how great it was shooting with just irons out to 200. That cheap scope has now moved to my 10/22TD.

| Thanks to all who answered my inq. I'll have the irons in hand before my first range trip and I guess since I too will not be looking to banging out bad guys a 600 meters that may well be all I'll need. Some where down the road I will probably wonder if I can really hit anything in the longer ranges and I may wind up with the glass.........Thanks again......Dan Daly |

ETA: I would use a magnified optic If I was shooting for groups, but not at steel unless I am feeling lazy. |

In my opinion the best "all around" optic choice for the AR platform
is a 1-4 scope. Buy the best one you can afford. There are lots of them in the $200-$300 price range. If you can afford the $400-$500 you can get even better options with better glass. There really is no limit.....you can spend upwards of $2.5K on a short power optic. In my personal experience the best "bang for you buck" is in the $400-$500 range. Lots of choices with excellent glass and nicely matched reticle/turret combos. Take a look at the Vortex Viper PST 1-4 or the Weaver Tactical 1-5. |

Fixed low power optics work nice too. |
| I just purchased the P-223 that is in the link. They were running a special where you could get the mounts for free with the purchase. I have no complaints with the scope, and I am not sure you can get anything better in this price range especially when I got the mounts for free. If you are looking at budget scopes, this one is pretty good. If you are looking at budget red dots, take a look at the Bushnell TRS-25. |

I have an aimpoint but if I were to do a buffet build I think I would pick up that tr25. I just read about then for the first time the other day. Sound impressive fit the price. |
