I'm considering buying a scope and mount set up for my RRA entry tactical. I probably won't be shooting past 200 -300 yards. I'd like a quick detach mount as I have a Bushnell Holosight on a LaRue LT110 and it'd be good to be able to quick swap them. Budget is an issue, can a good rig be had for around $300? I noticed the LaRue scope mount is around $215 and this will probably break the bank. Anyone else make a similar QD mount? Also I have to admit to being a complete cherry when it comes to optics, so what do the specs such as 3-9X32 indicate? Also, what is "eye relief"? Thanks for helping a noob. |

Armalite makes a 1 piece mount that's about half the cost of the LaRue and is very solid. Not as quick to dismount and remount as the LaRue, and doesn't offer quite as much eye relief, but still easy to swap, and a good alternative for less if money is tight. Eye relief is the distance your eye has to be from the scope eyepiece to get a good view. Most magnified optics on ARs need to have the eyepiece forward of the charging handle to get a good cheekweld and still have your eye positioned in the right place, but it's different for everyone. As a result, if using regular rings, the front ring would usually be off of the receiver, so people either use extended one-piece mounts like the LaRue or Armalite, or use an extended rail to give both height and forward mount space for regular rings. Extended rails often don't come off as easily as the mounts above, though, so switching would be more tedious. A good quality inexpensive combo for a first scope would be the Burris Fullfield II in 3-9x40 mounted in the Armalite. That would run you under $300 if bought new, and even less if bought from the EE. SWFA sells the Burris cheap, and it's quality glass with good resale value when you upgrade. www.swfa.com/pc-8071-203-burris-3-9x40-fullfield-ii-rifle-scope.aspx Here's the Armalite mount. Note that the front thumbscrew is off the receiver, but the recoil lug, which takes the stress, is in the last slot, so it's stable. |
