Looking into a RDS to add to my AR-15. The primary use will be going to the range, and then home defense. I don't like the long length optics, Id only want something at most 5 inches long max. Ive already looked into eotech as I see many people use this so it is already being considered, but I'd like to have some lower cost options. Also looking into Vortex also. I want something that will cover the base of my anticipated shooting distances, as I highly doubt I'd go beyond 100 yards but I dont need to be good for 500 yards and stuff...

My preferred budget red dot is the Bushnell TRS-25.  I think they're still on sale at palmetto state armory right now.

If I'm spending more than the Bushnell TRS-25 then I'll jump up to an Aimpoint.

How much $$ can you spend? I would highly recommend the AImpoint Pro if you can swing it.

Look at the Lucid M7 microdot.   Short.  A mere 4.6 ounces.  Has EOTech like circle dot reticle, automatic dot intensity adjustment with manual over ride.  Tethered turret and battery caps, runs on a single AAA battery.  Very durable.  I have two, running one of them on a 12 gauge tactical shotgun.  Takes the recoil with no problem.  It sells for around $170-189 delivered.   You have to pick up a riser separately, as it is designed to be used either on a riser or low mounted directly on the firearm, like on my shotgun.  A riser is cheap, about $15-20 or so.

Here is one of my M7s mounted in a low ADM QD mount on my carbine.  That mount gives an approximate absolute co-witness.   A one inch riser would give a lower 1/3.

Which ADM mount are you using?

That is the AD-170-VFG.  It was originally designed to attach vertical grips or bipods  to a bottom rail.  But it can be used to QD anything Picatinny to Picatinny.  Since it uses the ADM QD ssystem, it is true return to zero.  It is a .600" riser height.  It places the M7 a little low for true absolute cowitness, more like upper 1/3, but with sights folded it has unobstructed field of view and perfect stock cheek weld.  With sights extended and the illumination off, you have no obstruction of the front sight through the peep.  If you turn on the dot and look through the peep at the front sight, you get a good cowitness, but it is upper 1/3.

I prefer the solid cheek weld and lower mounting position, less likely to get hit or bumped.  Not stuck up in the air inviting contact.

I swap this QD red dot out with a LaRue QD mounted VX-R 3-9x40mm Leupold scope.  I swap pretty regularly and both have great return to zero.  That dot is used by me without reservation for home defense both on the carbine and a second one low mounted, no riser, directly on a tactical shotgun.  Neither has malfunctioned in any way for the two years I've run them.

Distance between your eye and the optic. If you have a 3" eye relief that means your eye can by up to 3" away and still maintain a good view down the optic.

Means you can look down them from any distance you want... the limiting factor being your vision instead of the optic.
