First question - aimpoint red dot style vs eotech halographic. I know (or think I know ) the basic differences, and I know the military uses/like both of them, and I know they are both high quality for high dollars. Are the preferences mainly subjective, or are they mission specific, or what?

Secondly, for those of us who are not in Iraq, or SWAT team members, i.e., those of us who are building toys, rather than tools on which our lives are dependent (screw the cost!), are there some also-rans out there (Hakko, Bushnell, etc.), which are less robust, perhaps, but reasonably effective, and which sell for considerably less than the Big Boys?

I would appreciate any input from the cognoscenti out there, and I would expect that this info would be useful to a lot of others.

You could take a look at the Trijicon Accupoint scopes. I have one on order for my FNC. It supposedly combines the best parts of a red dot scope with variable magnification too. We'll see.

Another bonus is they are only half the price of the ACOGs, still you could get something like a Leupold VX-III for the same price...

I've used both quite a bit and the only reason I bought an Eotech over an Aimpoint is I didn't have to spend another $100 to mount it.Hell,it really wasn't that expensive either. The cheaper models will serve you just fine unless you need nightvision.Bottom line with optics, you get what you pay for.

BTW, I like the EOtech.

heres you a good comparison- eotech for short range - its the bomb, zero the circle at 25m and your gonna get some, 50m and beyond gets a little fuzzy. cqb sight !

aimpoint, 0-50 not so good , not as fast as the eotech , however for longer ranges the 2 moa dot comes in handy, good to 100m out .

spectr says get some

over and out

RRA, EOTech, Chevy

The center dot of the EOTech is supposed to be 1MOA and is more than able to reach out and hit a man-sized target at 400-450yds with a tad bit of Kentucky Elevation.

I haven't had any problems with fuzziness. Just remember to look at your target and not the reticle.

The EOTech was WELL worth the money, too.

I have seen a lot of civilian EOTechs fail, but CAG, SAS, SF and all the big boys are using them, so I guess they work.

I like Aimpoints.

I may be wrong but I think you can get the Aimpoint in 4x magnification like the ACOG’S The Eo’s have none. Also the Bushnell’s are made by Eotec so I have been told.

I love my EOTECH 552  I put off going to an electronic sight for years till I tried an EOTECH ----SOLD-- the best,  fast & accurate sight out to about 300yds IHO.
BTW the Bushnell is an EOTECH without the armor or the water proofing.

I've got the aimpoint and regularly tag 8" x 8" steel at 200 yards.

Either one of these are great - so go look at them and pick the one you like.

I have an eotech 511 and an Aimpoint ML2.  Both are great for fast target acquisition.  I think the eotech is a little better out to 100+ yards (just my opinion though).  Both are high quality.  IMO the eotech is cheaper b/c you do not need a mount (when you compare apples to apples [ML2 to 512/511])  Look on the EE for the best price for a new or used eotech/aimpoint.

Please don't buy a chinese knock-off!  All those people do is reverse engineer american workmanship and sell their crap back to us.
