I am trying to decide between two budget optic setups and want some outside opinions.
I'm building a 16" 1/8 Recce and am wanting something with a little more magnification than my TR24G 1-4x. It will primarily be a range/coyote gun, with occasional use at the local 2-gun events. Max range likely 300-500 yards, mostly 200 though. I have the 1-4x on my blackout SBR and it works great, but I'd prefer a higher mag on what I'm hoping will be my new do-all rifle. My choices are as follows, both are between $400-450. Not looking to spend more. Option 1: Vortex Diamondback HP 2-8x Offset TRS25 red dot Option 2: Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x There are pros and cons to each option. The first gives me higher mag and faster transitions than spinning a cattail, the second gives me a single optic solution and still enough mag for my uses. I've read myself into the dirt over this and can't make up my mind. Please offer me some opinions/advice. |

Thanks for the responses so far guys. I think I've decided to go with the two optic setup.
I was leaning towards Vortex because of their warranty, but am open to other brands. How are the warranties on Weaver scopes? The Leupold Patrols are very nice with the firedot, but I have to stay on budget here. I can get a TRS25 and mount for $100, leaving me with 300-350 for the scope. I know I could save up, and typically I would, but that is a rabbit hole that leads to Nightforce and Zeiss and there are too many good optics at my price point that would fit my needs. I would prefer a scope with either bdc or mildots so I can calculate holdovers. I have a .308 bench gun for really long stuff, so target turrets aren't necessary for the "Recce," but I don't mind having them either. One of my .308 bolt guns wears a SWFA SS fixed 6x42. I've been thinking of putting a variable on it to get more range. I could move the 6x42 to the new "Recce," it is durable and crystal clear, and has been my hunting scope the last couple seasons. I'd add a red dot on a 45 mount for close in. Opinions on fixed vs variable? I bought the 6x42 because I always wound up leaving my variables on 6 in the woods, though 8-10x is nice at 300 yards on paper. Thanks again for your opinions, it really helps. |

Like this with 45 degree offset Deltapoint Pro, both QD mounted? Very effective RECCE combo. Can't do this on OP's budget, but a Weaver 3-10x40mm Grand Slam Tactical at $299 and an offset red dot like Burris Fastfire 3, at about $200, or the TRS-25 would work. The GST Weaver is the best $299 midpowered tactical scope on the planet. My GST is on a bolt gun. http://i1366.photobucket.com/albums/r772/gbloss/Mobile%20Uploads/B68ECDC5-ED18-4769-AA86-78423FCE3D57_zpsqpjusfsn.jpg Quoted:

I have a red dot (Aimpoint PRO), low power optic (Vortex Viper PST 1-4), and a high power optic (Vortex Viper 6.5-20 which will be replaced when funds allow with something better) all in LT QD mounts. Since going to QD mounts I have been selling off my OK optics to fund high end optics and stop buy a bunch of OK scopes and I will have 3 high quality optics. |

I'm in this same boat. I have a vortex crossfire ii 4-12 on my Recce with an off set Venom. I want a lower power scope but I'm on a tight budget around 200 The Diamondback HP 2-8×32 is around $220, it seems like a good compact scope, but I haven't seen one in person. |

I tried the PA and strike eagle 1 - 6, I liked the PA reticle better, the strike eagle had better glass I think but I didn't like either on the 1x messed with my eyes if I was shooting both eyes open. Quoted:

I went with the 1-6 optic on mine. I tried the PA and strike eagle 1 - 6, I liked the PA reticle better, the strike eagle had better glass I think but I didn't like either on the 1x messed with my eyes if I was shooting both eyes open. I've got a Leupold Mark 6, the only reason I have such a piece of glass is because I bought it for half off. |

So I guess the question now is What scope for my Recce with offset red dot.
The offset red dot idea is set. I don't need a scope with 1x. I have a TR24G 1-4× but I want more mag. I have a SWFA 6x42 that could go on it right now. I am also considering 2-8×32 diamondback and 3-9x40 options. I feel like 6x is plenty for my uses, and typically leave my variables set on 6. Should I just use the SS? What else should I be looking at in the sub $350 range? |

If anyone in the same boat is following along, here's where I'm at now.
Vortex Diamondback 3-9×40 for the following reasons: It is only an inch and a half longer than the Trijicon TR24. It weighs the same as the TR24. It weighs 0.2 ounces more than the 2-7×35 Diamondback. It has a very wide (46ft @ 100yrds) field of view at 3x. This is the widest field of view I could find on a 3-9× scope. I figure the offset red dot will get zeroed in somewhere around 50 yards to compensate for up close, and that should cover it. I don't feel bad putting a 3-9× on that weighs the same as my 1-4×, one of my concerns was additional weight. The TRS25 and mount weigh around what irons would, so my "Recce" won't be any heavier than if I went the traditional 1-4× route. |
