I won't be buying an upper for a couple months but I'm considering either a 16" or a 14.5" upper. I'm liking the 14.5 as it is smaller. However I would be buying it with a FSB and the typical handguards. So I have 2 questions to help make my decision.
1) Which would be better for the 14.5? A carbine or midlength system? 2) If I wanted a free-float rail later, would I be able to change it just by dremeling the FSB? Or would I still have to remove the FH? The rail I'm looking at doesn't require removal of the barrel nut so I'm assuming I would be fine. This is the upper I'm considering: http://palmettostatearmory.com/2271.php And this is the rail: http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=2563 |

in theory carbine is better for a 14.5, but with a light buffer and a properly sized gas port midlength is fine...so whichever floats your boat.
you should not have to remove the FSB to install that tube as long as you dremmel it down good enough. if you change your mind to a rail that requires swapping the barrel nut then you will have to remove the FSB, i dont think it dremmels down enough to clear the barrel nut. you could also use the 2 piece ones that clamp around the stock barrel nut if you decided you wanted to keep your FSB intact and use a shorter rail. |

Well I figure if I get a carbine then later on (I'm only 19) I can get a Form1 for SBR. Then I can chop the barrel to 11.5 and put a suppressor on it and the carbine will be ideal.
I think the PSA carbine I linked to is probably what I'm going to end up getting. I'm working on the lower right now. Also I'm pretty set on a 12" rail for looks (yeah yeah I know) and also I never know when I will use it. The Evolution rail is pretty light though so it shouldn't be an issue. |
