Folks,

I know an M1911A1 would be the "best" sidearm choice for a retro M16, however, what are your thoughts for a S&W Model 15 as a retro sidearm?

I am also starting to look for a retro shotgun...

Retro sidearms would include:

M1911A1

Browning Hi-Power

S&W Model 10 (Victory or otherwise)

S&W Model 36

S&W Model 39

I'll add more as I think of them.

David

Detective special.
1917
PPK
Model 19 S&W
j frame aluminum snubby, or not aluminum
Cobra
Model 39 s&w

There's more.....  those are off the top of my head....

Isn't a model 15 close to a 10?

JJREA,

Both 10 & 15 are K frame S&Ws, but the 10 is fixed sight, while the 15 is adjustable...

Gotta go with the Smith & Wesson "Aircrewman". Lightweight Pre-Model 10 with round butt aluminum frame and 2" barrel.

Mod 15 would be period correct.  Didn't the Air Force issue them to Security/Air Police?

Don't overlook Model 19 (Combat Magnum).  Or, Browning Hi Power.

I was going to try and find a Model 39 to parkerize and have engraved with US property markings to go with my ill fated T48 FN FAL build. Thought it would have been a neat what if weapon combo.

Yup, they sure did.  Most every squadron I've been around, the puppy pushers still have a M15 revolver around.  They mainly use them for blanks when workign with the dogs though.  Never seen a Model 10 around though but I wouldn't put it past them being issued as well.  One thing I do remember is that back in 1989 when I was stationed in Italy, we had a couple of posts over at the AFSOUTH NATO base in Naples.  Now we didn't guard their gates (that was the Air Force Security Police and Italian Caribinari that did that job) but I do remember one time going through the gate and noticing the revolver in the SP's holster was a Ruger, probably a Security-6 with a 4" barrel.  I never seen the entire pistol but the cylinder latch was the unmistakeable Ruger design so that would be another one that you could add to the list of "retro sidearms."

Smith And Wesson model 59 9mm (1970) which was an outgrowth of the MK22 "Hush Puppy" S&W designed for Navy Seals based on a Model 39 with the framw modified for Browning Hipower mags....

I vote for the Hi Power. I've got an FN made and I love it, but it's a little beat up (Israeli vet) so it's more of a work gun. Would love to get a nice looking Browning made some day.

Mk22 would be pretty kick-ass as well.

If you can find a S&W model 15 that is reasonably priced  - that is an awesome retro police firearm.  Would be common with LEO of the 60s 70s.  I have one, a great compliment to shooting an SP1 for a range day.  It isn't fast to reload, but its retro and quality you can't get commonly today.  I picked one from a consignment sale at a local shop for $215 and it was a retired Sherriff deputy's carry gun from back in the 60'-70ss  he was going to another state and clearing out his collection.  I was wondering how many hippies and blinged-out pimps were ushered into a patrol car with the help of this - If only it could talk

J&G also had model 10's and 15's for awhile.
