This is kind of a re-post but with photos, I hope.

This was built for my son. He wanted a versatile AR that would "kind of" look like a Vietnam era M16 when the carry handle was attached.

The scope was  necessary for our range testing and has since been removed. I didn't have a spare riser block or Extra high rings so we just used the carry handle mount. The groups were fired at 50 yards to assure precise aiming with the 9x scope. The rifle shows very good accuracy potential.

Many thanks go out to all who have answered my many questions while doing this project.

The Parts List:

Lower) YHM, purchased locally.
Upper) PSA, Flat top 20" Madness, 1 in 7 Chrome lined.
BCG) R Guns
Stock Assy.) A2 with door, purchased at gun show complete with buffer assy.
Triangle Hand Guards) Ar 15 EE
Flash Hider, 3 prong) Midway USA
Carry Handle)(Cardinal forge) E-Bay
LPK, CMMG) Gift
Rock River 2 stage MN Trigger) GunBroker
Mag Pouch) Gun Show
Hogue Grip) GunBroker

Total investment. Just over $700

The retro guys will give you a lot of ribbing for running a A4 upper with triangle handguards and a 3 prong FH

Looks good and as long as he likes it, good on ya.  I also like the triangular handguards.

I like your rifle a lot. I have a A2, and the only thing I did to it was to replace the hand guards with triangles. They look better and perform better

Thanks for the positive remarks. We were a little concerned about the chrome lining because it seemed there was a general consensus that accuracy may be negatively affected by having it. In the end though, cost was the decision maker.

As you can see by the targets, it shoots pretty darn good. That is 9 different loads. It really likes the Nosler 55gr BT with H 335 and the 65's and 69's shot good to. Only a couple loads out of the 9 were only fair.

We are real pleased with it. The upper to lower fit was a little loose but I'm told that is common. "ACcu wedge" and a small "O" ring, (got the "O" suggestion on here) tightened it right up. The groups were fired before we added the "O" ring but I don't except a improvement in accuracy though I suppose it is possible.

As far as I'm concerned it is mission accomplished.

Now I have the bug. I deer hunted with my VTR-15 last season but light it is not. I'm looking for a light 16" flat top upper for it now. I may go 20" but it seems like it's much easier to find 16's. PSA has them on sale this weekend too but I'm not ready to buy yet.

Looks good.
Would have preferred either all OD or all black.
Not a fan of the optic-on-carry-handle thing.

I agree. We are considering painting the hand guards or keeping an eye out for a set of OD ones.

The "opiic-on-carry-handle thing" was just a temp thing as noted in the OP.

The bullets used were.
Bulk Hornady 55gr SP with canalure.
Nosler 55gr BT
Sierra 65gr BTSP
Sierra 69gr BTHP Match

The powders used were.
H-335
Varget
Reloder 15
WC-846

Some of the loads were alredy being used in my VTR. I took 2 deer with the 65gr SP last season with the VTR.

I'd say look at the Magpul MOE rifle length hand guards in Olive Drab or Foliage Green.  Those A1 handguards are too pretty to paint and I am not a fan of painting stocks.  The MOE has a similar feel with a slightly triangular shape.  Bi-pod mounting is easily done and you can hang a light on there pretty easily.

Nice build! Those A1s are awful nice to paint though...I'd find a faded set.
