I recently received my new 7.62x39 upper from SOTA arms. Looks and shoots pretty well, so I was pleased with it in that regard.

But it has some strange qualities as well.

It will not fit into my lowers without considerable effort. All my lowers are completed 80%'s. I thought that may be the problem but my A1 upper with Colt upper receiver fits perfectly, as does my other 7.62x39 upper. When I put the SOTA upper into my lowers it fits fine but the pin holes don't line up well. the front will fit easily but the rear sits farther back than the holes in the receiver. I can get the pin through, but its a real pain in the ass.

Whats more, I attempted to install a Troy Vtac alpha rail. What a pain that was.
My other uppers have troy drop in rails so I was familiar with the install process. I removed the stock handguard and barrel nut, added a standard Colt barrel nut, torqued down, lined up and put the gas block and tube back in place. Tried to put the Troy rail on and it wouldn't fit. The rail could not drop far enough onto the barrel nut to seat the teeth and rotate into place. Solved the issue by adding a home made steel bushing to the face of the barrel extension. Now everything is torqued down and in place, but I'm trying to figure out where everything went wrong!

Are out of spec uppers common?

I don't know if out of spec receivers(wether upper or lower) are "common", but it certainly isn't unheard of.

Alright then, guess Ill just go buy a new upper...HA! What a time to need parts eh?

Funny thing is that it fits my DPMS receiver block perfectly, but the Colt's don't. Fraking weird.

So will opening the mounting hole in the upper fundamentally compromise the receiver?
