Hi, new here, I was wondering if a Leupold scope such as the 3-9 VX-1 is too overpowering for a bushmaster A3 Carbine?  Here's the scope:

Thanks for your help

Depends on how far you plan on shooting and what your purpose is.

Sorry I forgot to include that, mostly range shooting(targets and such, nothing moving) no furthur than 150 yards.

That's more than enough to see the targets.  A 1-4x scope like the ones that are popular now would do it, or any of the ACOGs.

If you need to positively ID the target before shooting at it, say a critter of some sort, you might want the extra magnification.

It's too much.

#1 - you don't need 50mm.  40 or 42mm would be plenty.

#2 - unless you want to try and put hole onto hole, 9x is too much magnification, too narrow a field of view.

What do you mean "put a hole on a hole?"  Lets say I get a 40mm, would that be alright?  I am very unexperienced with scopes, and thus, am uneducated in such matter.  It isn't set on 9 or anything, I could have it on 3 or 4, so whats wrong with that?  I also might be doing some hunting, nothing serious like deer, but maybe just smaller animals, would this scope be appropriate for it?  Thanks

I'd look at a 3-9x-40mm.   That's a pretty "standard" scope.

Leupold would be a great pic - easy to recoop most of your purchase price if you decide you want something different down the road

Alright, thanks.  There's a nice Leupold 3-9x40 VX-II scope that a local gun store has, so I'll check that out.

This is sort of an unrelated question: If you still have the front A2 FSB, would a 3-9x scope mounted close to the bore show the FSB at 3x? I have a high powered 8x-up scope that won't show the FSB. I thought i read the 4x ACOG does not show the FSB either.

with the 4x acog there is a faint gray/black blur thats not really noticable

you'll probably see a little blur/gray.  shouldn't be a problem

If it was too noticiable, I could just mount the scope on top of the detachable handle, but it shouldn't be a problem.  I'm picking up the AR tomorow and same with the scope, I'll post some pics when I the scope mounted.

scope on top of carry handle not good

too high for good cheek weld

I did an experiment and could barely make out a small "stick" that is the FSB. I may have to get a 3/4" riser along with a scope mount in order to get it high enough. Right now I have a 8-32 scope that works great up to 12x. But even 8x is kind of overkill. I'm planning to switch to 4x.

Ok, carry handle mounted scope=no good.  Got it.

Thanks again
