I'm considering a POF. I'm not crazy about the brake. Is the brake required for proper functioning or can I replace it if I want? Thanks.

Muzzle brake has nothing to do with the function of a POF or any other "piston" AR (or any AR for that matter). Everything happens from the front sight back.
